A very spacious cottage with a fabulous living room with three sofas, feature red brick fireplace and chunky oak beams, ground floor facilities and a paved, gated/enclosed outdoor area with seating and washing line, this property is part of a former farmhouse in the heart of the quiet Bassenthwaite village, by a stream with ducks, and is perfect for exploring the Lake District National Park with walks for all abilities (many from the door). If you want quieter lakes, mountains and villages and the busier locations, all are within easy reach.

Switch off, relax, and unwind in the heart of the small village of Bassenthwaite, ideal for walking, climbing, and sightseeing. The location is beautiful by a stream where puddle ducks wander to and fro and swings in a small, wooded area, it is only a couple of minutes’ walk to the village pub serving local ales and meals (booking recommended and essential at weekends and during school holidays). Children (and the young at heart) can spend many happy hours playing in the wood, pooh sticks from the bridge, swings, football, or cricket on the village green, feeding the ducks and chickens and watching their comical antics, or sit by the stream on the benches and just relax with a book or drink or watch the world go by.
Brook House 2 is in the heart of Bassenthwaite village in the northern region of The Lake District National Park, Cumbria, approximately 15-minute drive from the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth. Keswick is a magnet for the Lake District visitor, with Lake Derwentwater, several parks including crazy golf, mini golf and putting, all its outdoor clothing shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries, museum, cinema, theatre, brewery and more. Cockermouth, more of a ‘locals’ town has Jennings Brewery tours, Wordsworth House (the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth), the annual food festival in September and a good selection of unique independent shops and eateries.
The cottage is an excellent base with plenty to do and many places to eat nearby in this quieter part of the Lake District, avoiding the towns and busier villages in the Lakes if you prefer. You can take walks from the door down country lanes, including 2 miles to the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, or for the more adventurous walk to Dash Waterfalls or climb Skiddaw Mountain, the fourth highest mountain in the Lake District or some of Wainwrights other northern fells. The lakes of Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummock Water, Ennerdale, Grasmere and Rydal, Thirlmere, Ullswater and Windermere are between 25-40 mins drive (depending on traffic), as well as the closer lakes of Bassenthwaite (5 mins) and Keswick/Derwentwater (15 mins).
Mirehouse historic house, grounds and adventure playgrounds, Dodd Wood Mountain forest and café, and the ancient church of St Bega on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake are under 10 minutes’ drive towards Keswick. Between 5- and 10-minutes’ drive towards Cockermouth is the Lakes Distillery offering meals, guided tours and alpaca walking, the refurbished Bassenthwaite Lake Station where you can breakfast, lunch or snack on the grand train from the Orient Express film, the Lake District Wildlife Park, and for those wanting to treat themselves with some pampering, there is the luxury award-winning spa at Armathwaite Hall.
The castle city of Carlisle, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Solway coast ideal for dog walking, bird watching or having a picnic, are 30 - 60 mins drive. Nearest shops in Keswick or Cockermouth, 15 minutes’ drive or many supermarkets do on-line deliveries. Pub and restaurant 200 yards.

Beautifull location. Very handy for Keswick by car or bus. Lots of space in the accommodation for 4 people. A very good pub 2 minutes walk away. There are plenty of walks from Brook House into the local hills.Alison the owner was very welcoming. We would stay here again.

Brook House 2 was one of the best equipped and comfortable holiday cottages we have stayed in. Alison was friendly and helpful but not intrusive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay - apart from the wet weather. The local pub, The Sun Inn had very good food and ales, and only a very short walk away.We would certainly stay here again if we return to the Lake District.
