Perfect for couples seeking a romantic Lake District escape, this charming upside-down cottage is brimming with historic character. It’s in vibrant Keswick – known as the UK’s adventure capital – and surrounded by shops, restaurants, pubs, cafés, the River Greta, the local market square, a museum and gallery, all within 0.5 miles. Leave the car at home and saunter to the shores of Derwentwater (0.5 miles) for cruises or motorboat outings. If you’re feeling energetic, why not tackle the 10-mile lakeside walk for spectacular views and photo opportunities? The neolithic site at Castlerigg Stone Circle (2 miles), framed by the dramatic peaks of Helvellyn and Skiddaw, is must-see. Keen walkers can also test their thighs by tackling Skiddaw (5 miles) or Blencathra (7 miles), while Bassenthwaite Lake (4 miles) is where to go for boating, paddleboarding and wild swimming.

The inside of this holiday home has a quirky layout, with a spacious open-plan living area occupying the first floor beneath a beamed apex ceiling. Original cobbled walls, wooden floors and quality furnishings create a homely atmosphere, and there’s a wood burner for making chilly evenings all cosy. Sink into the leather sofa with a film on the Smart TV or relax with some music on the DAB radio. From here, you’ve got fabulous views of the garden. For meals, head to the kitchen, complete with granite worktops, and cook up your own creations with local produce or treat yourselves to fish and chips supper from a nearby takeaway (350 metres). Food can be enjoyed around the oak dining table. When it’s time for bed, head downstairs to the vibrant super-king-size bedroom. It’s beautifully furnished with solid oak pieces and dressed with quality linens for your comfort. Underfloor heating beneath the tiled floor keeps things wonderfully warm, and there’s an en-suite wet room with a walk-in rain shower and a bath for leisurely soaks after days out on the fells.
