About this property

Grisedale Cottage is a charming, three-bedroom holiday home set at the end of a short row of attractive, 19th century former mill workers' cottages in the village of Stair, near Braithwaite in Cumbria. It has been enhanced by a more recent extension. The cottage is set in walker’s paradise. Nestled attractively at the foot of Catbells and Causey Pike, it is within striking distance of some of the finest peaks in the Lake District. Easier walking, through the wonderful Newlands valley is also on the doorstep. It is three and a half miles to the bustling market town of Keswick and is well placed to tour this wonderful part of the world by car. Ideal for a family or two couples. Take a few steps up into the hallway and store and hang up your outdoor clothes. You will find a modern shower room. Walk into your lovely dual aspect, sitting room and your eyes will be drawn to the delightful, deeply set bay window. Admire the original ceiling beams, multi-fuel stove and comfortable suite before taking three steps up to your kitchen with dining area. This is also a dual aspect room with natural light pouring through the windows, giving the room a cheerful and welcoming ambience. Step out of the kitchen door onto the patio and explore your delightful, wooded gardens, mostly of lawn with mature trees and shrubs. Go back inside and climb the stairs to find three good-sized and comfortable bedrooms: a double bedroom with king size bed, a double bedroom, and a twin bedroom. A modern family bathroom has a bath with a separate shower. For an energetic day visit the Newlands Adventure Centre to try your hand at rock climbing, canoeing, ghyll scrambling or archery. Walk up Catbells, for panoramic views of shimmering Derwentwater. Take a leisurely stroll into the timeless Newlands Valley. Enjoy the riverside path to the well-loved Swinside Inn for a bar meal. Drive to Keswick to explore specialist shops, excellent restaurants, cafes, and pubs and much more. Magical Derwentwater lies just a ten-minute walk from the centre of town.

Between the magnificent northern lakes of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, lies the village of Braithwaite. Still retaining much of its traditional appeal, the Coledale Beck runs through the village with whitewashed Lakeland cottages, two village shops and two real ale Inns each brimming with character! Between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw, there really is something for everyone. Visit Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the lake with an open-air theatre, or take a trip around the lake. Lake District Wildlife Park, Dodd Wood, Derwentwater, and Keswick with its wide range of attractions, are also within easy reach.

Great location for walking in Newlands and the north western fells.

  • Anna

It doesn't have the most up to date interior but it is so comfortable and warm that it made it hard to leave! The owners have thought of everything you need for a short stay and we'd love to go back. The location is beautiful and you can easily start a day's walk from the door. It's quite remote but the pub is within walking distance and a village just down the road you have everything you need.
