About this property

Stunning scenery surrounds this two bedroomed cottage which sleeps 4. Located close to Bassenthwaite Lake and Whinlatter Forest with beautiful views over the cottage style garden and fields towards the Skiddaw range. There are numerous walking opportunities directly from the door.

The north lakeland village of Thornthwaite is located just 3 miles north west of Keswick, between the eastern fringe of Whinlatter Forest and southern edge of Bassenthwaite Lake. Many footpaths surround the village with several routes into Whinlatter Forest including a popular footpath from the centre of the village which leads up beside the tumbling waters of Comb Beck, providing a very attractive path into the centre of the forest. There are also walks around Powter How Wood to Bassenthwaite Lake, a route to Braithwaite and a path across the valley to Dodd and Skiddaw.

Heron Cottage is a delightful 17th century cottage which retains many original and characterful features including low doorways, windows and ceiling beams. Situated in a peaceful area of Thornthwaite known as Powter How. Heron Cottage is set within beautiful and tranquil garden and surroundings and has fabulous views of the Skiddaw range and Bassenthwaite Lake.

Crazy 'collect your key' situation from the busy Keswick High Street where there is very limited on street parking meant restrictive arrival time. When travelling from afar you need to be very early in case of bad traffic (M6 etc) Dedicated parking for single car on the property. Fabulous rear garden with good views. A very good Conservatory extension. Acts as Dining room & day room. Pity about the constant noise of vehicles from the road below. The shape of the valley seems to amplify even distant vehicles. We had a wet cold week with the weather. The old stone cottage had damp patches on the Lounge wall and one of the bedroom walls. We had to use the gas fire to keep the walls dry. The cottage has low doorways and you quickly learn to duck and step through into each room. At 6 foot 6" I expected some issues, however the low corridor the upstairs bathroom was almost impossible for me to limbo! The downstairs toilet had a far better height! The Kitchen was full of an eclectic collection of old worn and a few quality items. On the whole everything was tired. We had to buy a chopping board and wooden spoons as the ones at the cottage were only good for throwing in the bin. The oven, hob, microwave, fridge, toaster, dishwasher were all fine and good quality. Really needs a new kettle! A total contrast of the good and the rubbish! Very glad we also brought spare Tea Towels and additional hand towels as well as the specified Bath towels. What was supplied was inadequate. The sofas were grubby. We did not sit on them once! The redeeming feature is the view from the conservatory & seated areas in the garden coupled with the fact so many wild birds visit the garden. We also saw Eagles & Heron. We bought a big bag of seeds & nuts for the many bird feeders, we were well rewarded. The house is full of fantastic books, jigsaws & Dvds etc. Plenty for those who want to stay in for the whole week. We did not use any of the Tv's or Players only a Radio. Overall only 3 Stars.

Our stay at Heron Cottage was just what we wanted, a perfectly situated cottage ie private, quiet, great views, garden and situated so that you could walk from base. The cottage is really quirky, we loved it, the low ceilings, comfortable bedrooms, the conservatory we virtually lived in it, the views of the lake were so picturesque and calming. The cottage was very well equipped and lacked nothing, it was very cosy and we really appreciated the personal touches applied by the owners.Being lovers of the great outdoors ie Fell runners and keen on natural history we could run either from the cottage which is at the base of Barf or else a short drive to Wythop to train on Sale Fell which is perfect ground.Swans could be seen every day on the lake from the cottage, we spotted the Ospreys on our first day and enjoyed watching the garden birds on the feeders in fact the walk to the Bird Hide alongside the lake is only 5 minutes away so all in all it was pretty perfect for us.I nearly forgot the collection of books brilliant.
