About this property

This South-facing mews cottage is part of a grammar school conversion, on the edge of the town of Cockermouth in the Lake District. Full of character, Strawberry Mews is a Grade II listed historic building dating from 1890, with character features in a relatively unspoilt and undiscovered part of the Lake District, offering spacious accommodation for a small family or couple looking for a relaxing getaway, while also being within easy reach of the stunning lakes and bustling resorts of the Lake District. The property has extensive grounds, where you can sit out on the patio area with the provided furniture and enjoy the peaceful location, along with ample off-road parking for two cars.

Entering the property, you will discover wonderful character features, including beautiful high ceilings and tall arch windows, maximising your view and the amount of natural light that can flood into each room, while the open-plan layout adds to the spaciousness of the property. The living/dining room is carpeted, giving it a cosy feel with a sofa to relax on while enjoying one of the provided books or family board games, or just simply finding something fun to watch on the TV, while the dining table has seating for the whole group, so you can sit down to meals together. Through the archway, you will find the well-equipped and fully-fitted kitchen, with stunning marble worktops, large fridge/freezer and a handy dishwasher to take care of any washing up, not to mention a Tassimo pod coffee machine for added luxury to your morning routine.

Another very thoughtful touch is the Welcome Pack waiting for you upon your arrival, full of goodies and basics including a bottle of locally brewed beer, teabags and coffee pods (fresh milk in the fridge) for you to enjoy during your stay (do please share your memories on the Instagram account www.instagarm.com/strawberrymews)! Upstairs there are two double bedrooms; the master with a double bed while also boasting fitted wardrobes for your belongings, and a further double bedroom with bunk beds, both bedrooms overlooking the garden area, with high ceilings and tall windows giving them a spacious feel. The family bathroom has a bath with shower over, so you can choose how to best prepare for each day.

The centre of Cockermouth is within walking distance, with a host of independent shops and cafés, artisan bakeries, pubs, restaurants and supermarkets, along with peaceful riverside walks, as the town is conveniently placed at the confluence of the Derwent and Cocker rivers. Known as the birthplace of William Wordsworth, you can visit his Georgian family home, owned by the National Trust, while Cockermouth Golf Course is close by for keen golfers, and whisky & gin lovers will enjoy a fascinating day out at the Lakes Distillery. Bassenthwaite Lake and National Nature Reserve, owned by the Woodland Trust, is within easy reach; the Lake District's first ever wetland nature reserve, visitors can expect to see a variety of birdlife.

The lesser explored but stunning North Western Fells are only a short distance away, as slightly further afield, keen walkers can climb the peaks of Helvellyn, Skiddaw and Grisedale Pike, while the historic landmark of Castlerigg Stone Circle, thought to be more than 5000 years old, and the incredible Aira Force Waterfall, are well worth a visit. The popular town of Keswick is home to Derwent Water, where you can enjoy a boating experience, a variety of water sports activities or a simple lakeside stroll and a picnic, depending on how you want to explore the area. With plenty to see and do within easy reach, Strawberry Mews is an ideal base for a relaxing break in the Lake District.

Cockermouth is a small market town in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, resting at the confluence of the Derwent and Cocker rivers, and is a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, while being only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is known for being the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes of Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.

Quiet location with easy access to the local area. The only negative we had were the sofa's. They are seriously uncomfortable and really let the otherwise fabulous accommodation down. Would definitely recommend staying here.

The property however would benefit from a good dusting to remove the cobwebs high up on the walls. Some basic maintenance wouldn't go a miss, kitchen taps could do with tightening up. We have also experienced the famous sofas and can only come to the same conclusion as everybody else. Other than that we had a lovely time.

We would love to stay again and will recommend to our friends.
