Guests say

Canalside Wharf is a well-received cottage in Retford, praised for its comfortable beds, cleanliness, and prime location with easy access to local amenities. Guests appreciate the property's proximity to the town centre, supermarkets, and the scenic Chesterfield Canal. While some minor issues were noted, the overall sentiment is positive, with recommendations for future stays.

The property generally maintains high standards of cleanliness, though an isolated comment mentioned finding trash and cobwebs upon arrival. This seems to be an exception rather than the rule, as other reviews do not report cleanliness issues.

The location is highly praised for its convenience, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and public transport. The scenic canal and the presence of a supermarket nearby are frequently mentioned as positive aspects.

Guests find the beds comfortable and the property spacious. However, some guests noted a lack of storage space and issues with the practicality of the property for larger families, slightly affecting the comfort score.

The property is well-furnished and equipped with necessary appliances, but some guests suggested improvements such as adding a tumble dryer, wall shower, and clearer instructions for appliances. Maintenance issues like a non-functioning bath plug were also mentioned.

There are no specific mentions of gifts or extra thoughtful touches provided by the hosts in the reviews. Therefore, it is not possible to assess the thoughtfulness based on the available information.

So this property is perfect for that. We also visited the Majestic Theatre which you can see from the window! However, having rented many holiday homes over the years, this has to be by far the least loved and unwelcome (and dirtiest!) one of all. It doesn’t seem up to the standards of Sykes Cottages. On arrival we usually find a welcome note or even a loaf of bread, mild, teabags etc. But there was nothing suggesting that guests were coming. The information pack was three pages of orders but no useful information whatsoever – for example: further instructions on the gates/codes, the alarm, how the appliances work, television, hot/cold water, heating, things to do in the area, doctors, pharmacy etc.) On Sunday night we had to take the bin out, but no one else did (we were waiting for the rest of the street since there was no schedule in the property to tell us which bin). In the end we had to find the information online because the schedule changed due to the holidays – both bins were overflowing and hadn’t been emptied in a while. The property wasn’t clean when we arrived. There was unflushed urine in the downstairs toilet, mold in the coffeemaker and in the laundry room there was a plastic bag of used sanitary pads and some balled up dirty sheets and towels(?). These last items we found on our last day because we had asked if we could check out a bit later and we could if we left the property as clean as possible – we got rid of all the cobwebs mentioned in earlier reviews! The property also isn’t very well equipped. Lacks some basic kitchen utensils like a ladle, a cafetiere/coffee filter, no spare bin bags. There is no broom, a squeegee to clean the shower screen, a bathmat. No cupboard or storage space to unpack your suitcase. One of the lamps downstairs didn’t have a lightbulb (we didn’t use the lamp) but there were no spare light fittings anywhere in the property to replace this if wanted to. And the wooden panel below the dishwasher keeps falling out every time you open the dishwasher. We didn’t mention these issues to the owner at the time of stay because at that point there is nothing you can do about these things and we are after all, on holiday. I think the property needs to be checked more often and between guests I would recommend a professional cleaner. I have seen on other review sites that the same things have been said before, so hopefully the owners can look into this to make this property feel more loved and welcoming. Like I said, the location is great and especially in winter time it’s nice to have your living space on the top floor with an open plan kitchen, dining- and living room so you can all be together. We did have a lovely holiday, however, we would have preferred it without doing so much cleaning!

It is within close proximity of lots of shops, supermarkets and restaurants/ cafes. It’s also a short walk to the train station and to the bus station. The accommodation was very homely and lovely touches of board games and books to keep the family entertained should we have stayed in. I loved the sun shining through the skylights when sat in the living room or at the dining table. The high ceilings made the space seem so much larger. It was great to have a washing machine so you don’t have to take dirty clothes home. It would have been nice to have a coat stand as a few times we were caught in the rain and used the airer to hang our coats on. The hosts are lovely and so accommodating which was lovely as you don’t always get to speak direct when booking through an app. Would highly recommend - we found it great value for money. Thank you.

The double beds were really comfortable and bedding and furnishings were great. Unfortunately the plug in the bath wasn’t working properly which made it very difficult to use. On saying that we had a lovely stay and ideal base for us visiting family and will definitely return.
