About this property

Nestled on the edge of the conservation area, down a pedestrianised cobbled street in the centre of Horncastle, just a stone’s throw from a range of shops, restaurants, and pubs, lies this quaint, yet thoughtfully-arranged property, Hangman’s Cottage. Tastefully furnished with a superb walled garden with a summerhouse, Hangmans Cottage offers a romantic bolthole for couples looking to access this bustling, historic market town. Step into the lounge, complete with antique sofa, Smart TV and woodburning stove, complimented by the quarry tile flooring. Whisk up something special in the kitchen, offering electric oven and induction hob, microwave, fridge, and dishwasher. Step out to the walled garden, surprisingly spacious for a property of this size, where you can relax on the patio furniture or under the pergola, get grilling on the barbecue or take yourself into the inviting summerhouse with breakfast or a good book. Start your nightly routine in the shower room before heading up the narrow stairs to the double bedroom, a small but perfectly formed space with a wall mounted smart TV. Start your morning with a wander into the town, picking up a pastry and coffee from Myers before browsing the many antique stores, independent shops and twice weekly market. Steeped in History, and boasting 18 English Heritage Blue Plaques, take notice of the 18th and 19th century architecture throughout the town, wandering the cobbled streets and historic spots such as the Church of St Mary’s with some of the original structure dating back to 1250. Later in the evening maybe dine at one of the many splendid restaurants the town has to offer, followed by a quality amateur production at the unique 96 seater Lion Theatre where several productions a year are performed including a festive Pantomime. For something more lively take a stroll to Old Nick’s Tavern for home brewed Real Ales & regular live music. Once Horncastle is explored, why not head to nearby Woodhall Spa with its cosmopolitan ambience of wine bars and fine eateries which line the boulevard. Visit the heated outdoor pool in Jubilee Park or catch an afternoon matinee at the quaint Art Deco Kinema In The Woods. Maybe a round of golf at one of the world class courses, close to the famous Dambuster’s base. Within 23 miles you can also find the iconic Lincoln Cathedral, Medieval Bishop’s Palace and the Norman fortress of Lincoln whilst to the east are Blue Flag sandy beaches, dunes and nature reserves to enjoy at Sutton-on-Sea, Mablethorpe, Theddlethorpe and Donna Nook, here during the winter months newly born seal pups can be viewed at the vast colony, one of only 10 such sites in the country. In contrast, there is thrilling motor sport at nearby Cadwell Park, and horse racing at Market Rasen racecourse. Choose Hangman’s Cottage for a splendid retreat in the heart of Lincolnshire.

Horncastle is a bustling market town known as the Gateway to The Lincolnshire Wolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town offers antique shops, pubs, tea rooms, cafes and restaurants. Close by quiet roads lead to pretty villages and market towns, including Spilsby, Alford, Louth, Market Rasen, and Caistor. The fun of the seaside is just 20 miles away with many sandy beaches to enjoy at Skegness, Ingoldmells, Sutton-on-Sea and Theddlethorpe. Spend a day discovering the cobbled streets of the hilltop cathedral city of Lincoln with it’s castle, museum and shopping at Bailgate and the Waterside shopping centre, plus the beautiful nearby town of Woodhall Spa is known for it's two top class golf courses. There are several aviation attractions in the area including the world-famous Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby, only 7 miles away. Horncastle is the perfect base for a varied and enjoyable holiday.

The hangman's cottage is a wonderful quaint place to stay The attention to detail is first class from the quality of the renovation to the history of the building and the thoughtful gifts left by the owner The position close to town was great for visiting restaurants and shopping

From the ingenious design and exceptionally high standard of finish to the high-end quality of every item within it. The ‘Welcome Folder’ is perfectly laid out and instructions are clear, precise, and easily understood as is the pre-arrival information. Everything works as it should (the shower should win an award as should the bed and half a dozen other items) and it’s difficult to think of anything you could possibly need that isn’t available. The ‘Welcome Pack’ is extensive and includes too many items to list and again it is of top quality. No worries about arriving and needing to get to the shops straight away. Logs and kindling for the log burner are also readily available for the whole stay, not just a starter pack. Then there is the garden and the summer house (great heater in there and it was super-toastie even when it was -4 outside), the seating, barbecue, chimera, water feature etc.etc. Again, all top quality and would allow you to enjoy the cottage whatever the weather or season. The thought, generosity, and attention to detail afforded by the owners is quite extraordinary and the longer you stay there the more details and wonders you discover. However, this really doesn’t do Hangman’s Cottage justice, only by staying there can you possibly enjoy and appreciate what is on offer. It really is incredible. Not so much a holiday as an experience. I have stayed in many cottages and the like over the years, and this is by far the best in its class. Outstanding in every department. The only downfall is that you eventually have to leave. Thank you, Joy and James, for a wonderful stay. Superb.
