About this property

… between Throwleigh (1 mile) and Gidleigh (1 mile), a beautifully renovated, late medieval cottage sheltered by oak trees. It has a well restored barn attached and faces south over its own neat, walled garden where you can sit in the sun and listen to bees, birdsong and the occasional cluck of the friendly owners’ chickens (free-range eggs). The owners live on the same smallholding in an ancient farmhouse with two friendly dogs and a cat.

Inside, very smart with slate floors downstairs and beautiful oak floors upstairs. Hall; step down to living/dining/fitted kitchen (gas hob/electric oven) with granite worktops, folding dining table/chairs, huge fireplace (woodburner), TV/DVD and door (5’3" lintel) to small garden; shower-room (suite, big cubicle); washer-drier in cupboard. Stairs up to two bedrooms (limited clothes-hanging space) – a roomy double (5' bed, TV) with handsome roof timbers and original ancient stairs down to the living room (you don’t have to use them!), and a twin (2'6" beds, linkable to 5' double). Spring water. A lovely retreat with wonderful walking directly on to the moors from your doorstep; abundant wildlife and moorland archaeology.

Reviews (11)

  • Det Fischbach

"The Bakehouse is lovely as is the surrounding area and Dartmoor in general. The most overwhelming impression was the peace and tranquility with only the sound of birds, the wind in the trees and rarely the sound of any human activity."

  • Holidaymaker

"A lovely cottage in a great situation! Thanks for a lovely stay, and a delicious cream tea!"

  • Mrs J Till

"A fantastic cottage in a beautiful but accessible spot on the moor. Ideal for relaxing, walking and exploring the moor. Well equipped and comfortable cottage with a warm welcome. We would definitely come back again."
