Oyster Cottage might have been built out of stone and cob by local farmers and fishermen more than 200 years ago, but it has now been transformed into a cosy family hideaway crammed with creature comforts.
The detached cottage is situated just yards away from the historic harbour at Cockwood, which boasts two traditional pubs that were once the favourite haunts of smugglers and privateers going back to the time of local heroes Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh.
Oyster Cottage boasts views of the harbour and estuary beyond from its two first floor bedrooms that can sleep a family of up to five. The open plan living room and dining room offers a peaceful space in which to unwind, share a meal and a glass of wine, doze in front of a DVD or plan the next day’s adventures. The centrally-heated cottage also boasts an enclosed outside courtyard, perfect for relaxing with a good book or dining al fresco, and a generous kitchen/utility room equipped with everything needed to make you forget the daily grind.
Cockwood’s positon and transport links make it a brilliant base from which to explore this delightful corner of Devon. Just over a mile away along the South West Coastal Path is the sandy beach at Dawlish Warren, which has won 17 consecutive European Blue Flag awards for its water quality and safety. Less than 10 miles away by bus, train or car is historic Exeter, the culinary, retail and cultural capital of Devon, the seaside town of Exmouth within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is just a short ferry ride away and the English Riviera a 15 mile trip in the opposite direction.

We arrived to find a smashing welcome box of goodies which went down very well. The place was clean and welcoming, very cosy. Kitchen was one of the best equipped kitchens we've come across, plus a dishwasher as well - very handy indeed. We found the location brilliant for getting to most places by bus and ferry as we do a lot of driving and sometimes it's nice just to sit back and let someone else do the driving. Buses are very reasonable and start early and finish late. Perfect! All in all, a fantastic place.
