Turnpike Cottage is a recently refurbished Grade II listed, three bedroom property set in the Devon countryside yet only half a mile walking distance from the sea. The cottage is in a fantastic location between the lovely South Hams village of Stokenham and the coastal village of Torcross.

20 acres of gardens, pasture and farmland surround the property with stunning views across the fields and out to sea. The garden is well established with an abundance of flowers, shrubs and soft fruit bushes and trees. It is fully enclosed (child and dog safe) and consists of different levels which are accessed by steps. You will also find a few extras to make your stay more comfortable and packing a little easier – including toys, books and games.

  • There are some great pubs and restaurants nearby and a superb farm shop just down the road. It is ideally placed for walking, bird-watching, sailing and exploring the surrounding area of Outstanding Natural Beauty rich in history and wildlife.

  • The private beach at Blackpool Sands is only a 10 minute drive away with parking, changing rooms and a beach cafe.

  • The charming, local market town of Kingsbridge is about 15 minutes away where you can sample the delicious local produce at the Farmers market which takes place on the third Saturday of every month.

  • A little further on (20 minutes) you will discover the historic town of Dartmouth with its winding Elizabethan streets and bustling market.

  • If not there is the stylish town of Salcombe where you can try a day’s sailing in the estuary, enjoy a relaxed ferry trip or simply wander through any number of the nearby picturesque villages.

      We were disappointed with Turnpike Cottage. We made the most of our holiday (mainly due to the weather), but the cleanliness of the property was poor (we did leave notes on the form supplied at the property, which had next to no space for comments!). From a cleanliness perspective the following items had to be cleaned before they could be used;kitchen worktopKitchen sink mugs wine glassesfamily bathroom WC (pubic hairs and pee stains around rim)En-suite shower cubicleBarbecue General observations;multiple cobwebs in kitchenmultiple cobwebs in loungeBlind does not operate in family bathroomDishwasher turned off behind fridge (fridge had to be moved to turn it on!)Flush in family bathroom WC is pathetic (multiple flushes required)No patio parasol (during the hottest week of the year!)Microwave dial worn/not readableVery dangerous to pull off the drive due to ZERO visibility!Rural Retreats miss-description;We were extremely disappointed by the fact that the property is not just close to a busy road, but immediately adjacent to it! Where double deck bus's pull up immediately outside the property and passengers can see directly into the bedroom when we were unpacking! Motorbikes were also routinely racing on this section, not to mention the fast speed of most traffic, making the exiting with vehicles a dangerous task (as highlighted above).Your description of the property does not mention the fact that the property is immediately on the road, which is very miss-leading. Overall our first experience with Rural Retreats has not been a good one and I think they need to reconsider this properties inclusion in their portfolio (albeit I note it is for sale) and at the very least, change their description for this property.

      Cottage OK.Shower poor.Little water pressure Bathrooms small but OK.Patio by steps needs edge protection to prevent dog trying to jump down and more importantly child falling.Trim hedge to improve visibility when turning on to road.Yale lock very difficult could result in guests being locked out.
