About this property

Nestled in the woodland and rolling hills of Tuscany and close to the amenities and thermal springs in the spa town of San Casciano Dei Bagni, this home is a rural idyll and a fantastic base from which you can explore the province of Siena.

Built in 1798, Casa Castano is an elegant and spacious home. Though the villa has been refurbished, it still contains all of its charm as the renovation used only traditional materials. The attention to detail in this house is sublime and paired with the vast garden this makes for a serene and comfortable place to stay.

Whether you are travelling with a large family group or with a few couples, this villa has room for everyone to retreat and relax in peace when they wish but come together to make memories inside the house and out! With 6 double bedrooms plus a twin bedroom there is ample space to accommodate everyone in your party in comfort. There are also 6 luxurious bathrooms and Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating available throughout the villa.

The garden is an amazing feature; with 10,000 m2 of lawns, olive, fruit and oak trees, dining areas and a pool lined with sun loungers, you could spend your whole holiday here just taking in the vistas of the surrounding countryside or reading in the shade of an ancient oak.

The nearest shops and eateries are available in San Casciano Dei Bagni which is under 5km away, quickly reached by car. The town has a number of bakeries, restaurants and shops dotted around the winding, medieval streets. A nice place to visit, you can also find ancient churches, the town hall and a 14th century palace to visit. With architecture spanning from the Etruscans and Roman eras and stunning views of the Val d’Orcia valley this is a lovely town to have so close by.

San Casciano Dei Bagni is best known however for its thermal baths. Whether you choose to take a dip in the Bagno Grande which is in walking distance of the town and is a well-preserved historic bath or you would prefer a day of luxury at Fonteverde spa, you can enjoy the warm therapeutic waters at both.

There are also many other towns you can visit nearby such as Radicofani which is 20km away and is known for its staggering fortress. Cittá della Pieve is also 20km away, here you can see the paintings of the artist Perugino and enjoy cuisine which blends Tuscan and Umbrian flavours.

Elsewhere, the stunning hilltop town Pienza is 45km away, while in under an hour you could be sitting sipping the famous red wine of Montepulciano. You could even visit Siena, which is 100km away and well-worth the 90-minute drive.

Amidst the Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana in the rolling hills of Tuscany, Casa Castano is perfectly situated for a relaxing break. Here you can spend your time exploring the countryside and the pretty hill-top villages which surround the home.

With walking trails, cycle routes and horse riding available nearby, there are plenty of opportunities to get out in to the fresh air and sunshine. You can also enjoy walking around one of the many vineyards and discovering how the region’s wine is produced, before purchasing a bottle or two for dinner. Many local wineries offer tours, tastings and even lunch.

When you wish to pick up some groceries or pop out for a bite to eat, the closest town is under 5km away. San Casciano Dei Bagni has charming shops and eateries and is a lovely place to spend the afternoon wandering around the historic streets and buildings. Make sure to see the Church of St Anthony, the medieval walls and gates and of course the views! This town is less known by tourists so you will be able to try some true Tuscan cuisine such as the Pici pasta in little family run restaurants.

Also in San Casciano Dei are the various thermal baths that the area is renowned for. Why not visit Fonteverde spa which is an award-winning spa complex with 7 thermal pools. The spa also offers many beauty treatments plus massages and places to eat, so you can make a full day of it. If you don’t fancy the spa, you can still experience the thermal baths, the ancient baths in town are still in use today which is a great experience.

This area of Tuscany is filled with gorgeous hilltop towns where time seems to stand still and many of these are within easy reach by car. Cetona is one of these, 17km from the villa and recognised as one Italy’s most beautiful towns. The mountain which the town is set on is known for its archaeological finds and evidence of human settlement over 40,000 years ago has been discovered here. You can see some of the artifacts in the prehistory museum or visit the archaeological park. The pretty 16th century piazza is also a relaxing place to sit down with a coffee.

Cittá della Pieve is 20km away, this unique brick-built town is on the border of Tuscany and Umbria and many visit just to see the paintings of the artist Perugino. You can book on to tours to see these art works plus more paintings and monuments. If you don’t have time for this make sure to visit the Oratory of Bianchi where you can see a large Perugino painting. The cathedral is also stunning. If you stop for lunch this is a great spot for trying local olive oil, truffles and cured meats.

Another brilliant place to visit for a day trip is Lago Bolsena. 56km away from the villa, this is Europe’s largest volcanic lake. Whether you wish to swim in the clear waters, unwind on the lake beaches, go fishing or even go on a boat trip there is lots to do here.

Picture-perfect Montepulciano can be reached in under an hour. The town is renowned for its famous vino nobile red wine, with several wineries offering tours and tastings. If you're a fan of fine wines, there's really no better place to be!

The incredible city of Siena is 100km from the villa and takes around 90 minutes to drive to. Head out early to make the most of the day as there is plenty to keep you busy, though the city is small enough to walk around with ease. Climb to the top of the 800-year-old Torre del Mangia for unrivalled panoramic views of the city and surrounding hills. The Palazzo Publico and the Duomo are also unmissable when visiting Siena.
