Pet Friendly Holiday Cottages

If you hold your pet close to your heart then leaving it behind to go on holiday can be an emotional strain, not to mention the hassle and expense of finding a dog-sitter or kennels. When you choose pet friendly holiday cottages you don’t have to worry about any of that, and your four-legged and two-legged family members can enjoy a really special holiday together.

You’ll find lots of pet friendly cottages to choose from, from spacious properties, barn conversions, and farmhouses, to smaller accommodation in remote spots, and near to some great hiking and cycling trails. Pet friendly cottages are more common than you might think and are often the only option if you just can’t bear to leave your dog behind.

Things to do on your pet friendly cottage holiday

Having your dog along for the ride doesn’t have to put limits on your experience. Actually, your dog can make the adventure even more special, as they explore new places, lead you along unspoiled hiking trails, and fill every moment full of love, enthusiasm, and muddy feet!

All along the UK, there are some great spots for pet friendly holidays, not to mention some amazing pet friendly holiday cottages. Head up to Scotland and your dog will be in heaven as they explore the rugged heathland or mountain trails, an exciting mixture of terrain and a big change for dogs that are more used to the patchy grass of the local park!

Head to the South Coast and there are lots of excellent beaches, such as Weymouth or Newquay, just be aware that at certain times of the year access for dogs is restricted. For dogs that have never seen the sea, let alone taken a paddle, a pet friendly cottage holiday by the seaside can be really magical, especially for them!

More pet owners are realising the advantages of pet friendly cottage holidays - the ease and convenience of your own personal space combined with the character and charm or these beautiful buildings – you’d be barking mad not to book!

"S15743 is in a great location for exploring the local area. We cycled for 4 days and visited many interesting villages, Belvoir Castle, Grimsthorpe Castle and Isaac Newtons birthplace which were all nearby.Unfortunately the cottage itself was a bit of a let down. It was not as shown in the photographs and felt as if someone lived there but had moved out for a few days for our stay. The rooms are cluttered with furniture and personal belongings. There was not one empty cupboard or drawer in the kitchen, so nowhere to put our own things, and a cupboard full of food and half used jars and bottles which is very off putting and not something we have encountered in rented accommodation before. The sink area is black and mouldy, the windows are covered with dust and cobwebs full of dead flies and the cooker hood is thick with dust. The fridge light does not work and there is not a single light fitting that has all its bulbs either fitted or working in the entire cottage. The master bedroom is thick with dust around the edge of the room and under the bed, the bathroom has a lovely bath and sink but is dusty, tatty and unfinished and the hand rail on the stairs is not fixed securely to the wall. The whole place feels grubby and neglected and we could not recommend it to anyone else or stay there again which is a shame because it could be stunning if it was cleared out, cleaned up and set up as a rental property and not, as it feels, a house share."

"The cottage was well equipped, when you could find what you wanted in the drawers and cupboards filled with diy equipment and sundry belongings of the owner. It was relatively clean but more than a little grubby in the corners, the fridge iced up on the bottom shelf ( where you would have vegetables and salad!). It was dark in the sitting room, bedrooms and kitchen. This would not have mattered so much if the courtyard garden had not been weedy, and totally uncared for. The garden furniture was dirty and what plants there were which had survived the weather needed to be cut back as they covered the table and some chairs. Even our dog did not want to go out in it! Local information was hard to find and some years old when we did find it. A map of the village would have been helpful as it took a few days to find the dog walks which were of sufficient length for a collie. The location was lovely and there are a number of attractions nearby. For us, it was fairly close to Cambridge so that we could see our newly born grand- daughter. As you know it was a last minute switch as the cottage we originally booked was needed by the owner for relatives for a funeral, and we agreed to give way for them. So in a way it was any port in a storm, but I do not think this cottage was worth the amount we paid and I would not recommend it unless like us, there was no alternative."

"Lovely cottage in a lovely location. The cleanliness of the cottage was let down by the strong musty smell in the kitchen. All basic requirements were met however the small extra touchs were missing eg. no iron or ironing board, nowhere in the bedroom to sit and dry your hair although there were 3 mirrors in the room there were no plug sockets near them therefore had to sit on the floor to dry your hair. Not enough towels for 3 people luckily we always take my own. Also an information folder would have been useful giving location of shops places to eat and places of interest to visit etc. The shower was very temperamental and only seemed to work if you ran the hot water tap on the sink at the same time, as we were only there for 3 nights it wasn't too much of an issue. The main negative for us was the owner who lived on site, who was very very particular about the gate on the drive being closed and told us he locked it at midnight and in fact was waiting on the drive with 2 large dogs ready to lock up at 10.30 pm when we returned from a night out. We have stayed in many many cottages over the years and have never had a curfew imposed on us!!! very strange. Finally 6 days after we had returned home we had a very rude phone call from the owner with a list of issues she wanted to discuss with us. Such a shame a lovely cottage spoilt by over zealous owners."

"We stayed in this cottage in June and I'm sorry now that I did not write a review at the time as it may have prevented Aly from having exactly the same experience as we had. I did however complain to Cottages4you as the Visitor Book made it clear that previous complaints had not been dealt with. Cottages4you did respond to my complaint with what seemed at the time to be serious concern and said they would be contacting both the owner and the regional manager to try and improve the cottage as well as to ensure there were more accurate photos on the website and that the description was accurate. Clearly if this happened nothing has been done about it. As well as the lack of cleanliness when we visited in June there was no dishwasher as stated on the details - this may have been replaced by now. We also had various health and safety concerns including the loose stair handrail - obviously still not dealt with 4 months later, medicines for hayfever etc being loose in a drawer and that there was no light outside the back door which is reached down 6 steep steps and is in total darkness at night.I too felt it was a shame as with some work done to it and more general care taken of it, this cottage could be excellent. As it stands this is not a Grade 4 cottage and does Cottages4you very little credit as a company. "

"S85279 cottage is situated in an ideal location with the canal tow path only a short stroll away. The owners made us extremely welcome (including our dog) and nothing was too much trouble for them. It is one of the best equipped cottages we have stayed at, being spacious, light, tastefully furnished to a very high standard and spotlessly clean. The cottage, especially the kitchen, had everything you could need. The washing machine was shared and housed in another building although we didn't use it as we prefer not to wash and iron whilst on holiday. We much prefer to have a dishwasher provided in the kitchen which there was, and it appeared to be brand new. (No musty smell that can build up on some machines). The owners were very helpful without being intrusive and they provided a very useful much appreciated welcome pack, as well as brochures regarding the surrounding area. The cottage is set in secure grounds next to, but separated from the main house, and we had no worries regarding leaving our belongings when we went out for the day because the courtyard was protected by five-bar gates. After dark, for our added security, the owner locked these gates and provided us with a key in case we were late back. Our thanks to Elizabeth & Mike, we really enjoyed our stay and will certainly be returning."
