What our customers say about their holidays

    • Margaret - Verified booking

We were very shocked and disappointed on arrival at this cottage.

The outside was extremely unkempt. There were weeds and dried leaves in the front. The gate needed varnishing. The windows had water running down the inside. It looked as though the double glazing had blown. They obviously need replacing. The windows were dirty. The front door needed varnishing. The glass in the front door needed cleaning. There was green mould on the picnic bench and seat in the front. The front of the cottage was not very inviting at all. Nothing like the pictures on the website. The table in the living room for two people was more like one would use for camping. It wasn't very clean. It was right in front of the window and if one wanted to have a meal, there was no privacy as there are a lot of people passing on foot. If the windows are repaired, a blind might be appropriate. The microwave wasn't working when we tried to use it. We rang the owners wife and she told us her husband would purchase a new one and drop it in. He arrived with the microwave. We asked did he want to check it was working but he seemed to be in a hurry. He told us to just set it up ourselves and put the old one in the box outside in the front. That just added to the outside looking more unkept. On removal of the old microwave we were horrified to find something spilled there very congealed. There was a mound of crumbs and a big spider ran out. This had obviously not been cleaned for a long time. There are health and safety issues in an unclean kitchen. The kitchen floor was not clean. There was a plastic bottle behind the bin and some chipolatas on the floor. We had to clean the kitchen ourselves with antibacterial spray and wipes. There were a few live crawling woodlice on the stairs. The bathroom was in need of maintenance . It needed painting there were marks on the skirting boards. The taps on the bath were stiff and hard to turn on and off. The hot tap was swivelling around on turning on and off. The seal on the shower screen needs replacing. It was preventing movement over the bath. The window ledges in the bedrooms were dirty. We cleaned them ourselves. There was thick dust on the back.of the mirror in the larger bedroom. The tops of the bedside cabinets weren't very clean. The mattress on the bed was thin and the springs were sticking in our back. It needs replacing. The iron bedstead was very uncomfortable and noisy. If of all these issues were addressed then the cottage would be of a higher standard meriting more stars It is only a ten to fifteen minutes walk into Howarth. There is a good bus service on the road nearby. There is also a lovely pub a few minutes away with good food and a handy corner shop. We have stayed in a number of Sykes Cottages over the years and generally we have never given a bad review.

Just back from a lovely mini-break with family, (2 adults, 2 children), at Duck Egg Cottage in Haworth.

We have been to Haworth before and it's such a beautiful place to visit with so much to see and do both in Haworth itself and in the surrounding area. Plenty of places to eat and drink too though it's usually recommended to book if possible, particularly at weekends. It was our first time at Duck Egg Cottage and we were really happy and impressed with the property and would certainly look forward to a return visit in the future. The location of Duck Egg Cottage is fantastic, it was very easy to find and the parking space right outside the house is a huge bonus and very welcome. It literally is 10 or 20 metres to the cobbles of Main Street in Haworth and it's great to be able to wander either before or after the coaches have been and take in all the history. Inside, the cottage was spotless on our arrival and whilst we were only there 3 nights we found plenty of everything we could possibly need for our stay. The kitchen is really well equipped..plenty of crockery, cutlery and utensils. We didn't use the wood burner ourselves but heaters warmed the house up very quickly when needed. TV is very good as is internet coverage..sometimes useful with older boys

Haworth was a beautiful place to stay and the location of the cottage was good.

The cottage itself wasn’t up to standard. First impression of outside looked scruffy, weeds and untidy baskets, broken gate and leaves/litter. All the windows were misted up/broken down and need replacing. Woodlice both dead and alive crawling in the property. Kitchen bin not emptied and floor not cleaned. Smell to the property like heavy smoker has lived there. All lights and skirting boards dusty/cobwebs. Bed wasn’t a king size as advertised, bedding all ok, bathroom ok…serviceable but ceiling needed cleaning and painting and the bedroom one also. Needs a good clean under all furniture which I would of done myself but only small hand held vacuum available to use. We made the best of the stay and out most of the day, didn’t cook in the kitchen, lucky with the weather so we were able to leave windows open. Wouldn’t return to this cottage, it’s the first time we have ever been disappointed with accommodation in over 30yrs! The locals made the holiday as all so friendly we would definitely return to this area.

We were very pleased with our stay at Duck Egg Cottage.

It does have it's own parking slot right outside the door which in Haworth is a real bonus. The cottage was very clean and comfortable. It is also in a very good situation being at the top of Main Street. So, if anyone renting it wants to do a walking holiday they don't have to trudge uphill every day to get to the moors. Plenty of good pubs and eateries just round the corner from the cottage. We would be very happy to rent this cottage in the future. Just a couple of suggestions but these are NOT complaints and had no serious impact on our holiday. I felt a few more kitchen utensils would be handy - ie: cheese grater, kitchen scissors and bottle opener. In the book of Cottage Notes some details of bin collections and items that can be recycled would be a good idea. Also a few leaflets of the surrounding area would be helpful.

We all had a lovely stay in the cottage.

My husband loved the log burner. Instructions for using electric heating would have been helpful.House warmed up quickly, once heating was on. Parking place was located beside the front door. There are a few pot holes in the car park,so be prepared in the dark. A quiet location within Haworth and handy for the Main Street. Tea,cake and milk left was welcome on our arrival. Co-op and Spar shops close to the railway station about 15 minute walk, down the hill. There were recycling bins around the close but unsure what we could and could not recycle, so did not use them. Really enjoyed the Beer and music festival at Worth Valley railway. We managed to walk some of the Worth Way at various points. A great cottage and area, would stay again. Highly recommended pea fritters from the chippy they close around 6pm.
