    Saxmundham Holiday Cottages

The Suffolk market town of Saxmundham sits on an old coach and horses route from London to the continent of Europe. Set in the valley of the River Fromus, the town is about 18 miles north of Ipswich and five miles from the coast.

Today, although you’re less likely to spot horses and carts in the town, it’s no less bustling than it was when it existed primarily as a travel pitstop. Lots of the buildings in the town still date back to this period and you’ll see Georgian and Victorian architecture throughout. There are even Elizabethan buildings still in place around the marketplace. Those staying in Saxmundham holiday cottages can browse the busy high street and enjoy the local cafes, pubs and restaurants. If you’re a keen foodie, the market held every Wednesday is worth a visit as sellers include local farmers and food businesses - and lots of samples! The town has great transport links to the rest of Suffolk and the coast in particular.

Holiday cottages in Saxmundham don’t come cheaper than through Snaptrip. Our best price guarantee ensures you won’t find a cheaper price on the same property from any other provider and, with thousands of holiday cottages on the site, there’s plenty to choose from.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • Lisa - Verified booking

      Please do not stay here.

I really don't have words to describe how bad this experience was. Firstly we arrived to find that the "off road parking" is actually a strip of land opposite the property with no guarantee of a space. We panicked every day on returning to the property that there would be nowhere to park. On entering the property we were greeted with the smell of damp and dust. One of the bedrooms had no lighting at all. On further inspection we found that the plug used to plug in the table lamp was not secured to the wall properly. We immediately contacted sykes but with no response we had no choice but to plug a lamp from a different room into the socket as there was no main ceiling light. We then attempted to eat dinner with our children. What was advertised as a "compact dining table" was infact a wooden bench attached to the wall with seating for two at most. We have three children and had booked a property for 5 and so fully expected there to be enough seats for us to eat together as a family. We had no choice but to eat out every night which was not part of our holiday plans and certainly not part of our budget. The quality of towels and bedding was extremely poor and the property itself was very dusty. I suffer from asthma and therefore spent the whole time feeling unwell. We did contact sykes on arrival and it took them nearly 48 hours to respond. They suggested asking the owner to come and clean the property but we declined this as I didn't want anybody entering the property whilst we were not present. On return sykes have contacted the owner who has not been willing to accept any responsibility. I have asked that at the very least the property description be changed to stop any further family holidays being spoilt but so far this hasn't happened either. If you are thinking of booking here, please don't. The area itself is beautiful and there are lots of lovely properties that deserve your booking. This isn't one of them.

The property is in a lovely area for visiting many of the wonderful places around Suffolk.

First impression when arriving was how disappointing the front of the cottage looked. The steps were in need of a good sweep and the front window sill needed a good wash. Even though the kitchen was supposedly new the state of the appliances left a lot to be desired. The kettle leaked, the oven was really grubby especially the grill tray. The microwave was, in our opinion, a health hazard. It was so rusty inside, I have taken photographs for you to see if needed. It really does need replacing. The property is advertised for five persons. How on earth five people could sit and have their meals on the really low bench and table in the kitchen I will never know. There were two of us and we really struggled, ended up eating our meals in the lounge at the coffee table. So inconvenient. We were very underwhelmed with the welcome pack of a small carton of milk. In conclusion does Sykes Cottages actually visit the properties before awarding them their star ratings?? This property did not warrant the rating it has been given. We use the rating system as a guide on booking the many holidays we have had with Sykes Cottages in the past.

      We had a lovely week, 27th April - 4th May 2024.

The cottage is located in the perfect place for visiting the nearby coast and villages such as Aldeburgh, Woodbridge, Framlingham, Orford, Southwold, Dunwich, Norwich and Ipswich. The cottage itself is quite compact and not a lot of storage space in the kitchen there was an empty drawer for our own belongings. The owners did leave us milk, cookies and chocolates which were greatly appreciated however we did find a water filter in the fridge assumably by the previous guests that had a lot of mould on/inside of it which wasn’t that pleasant. The stairs are very steep and wouldn’t be very good for those who struggle to get up and down easily, especially the top stairs to the attic bedroom but we managed. The bathroom was spacious enough however the shower head could have done with being cleaned or changed but all was pleasant besides that. The cottage as a base is perfect for those just coming to travel around the nearby areas. We enjoyed our stay for the most part and would recommend this cottage to others.

Really charming cottage in a quiet, pretty village.

An ideal location for exploring the wonderful Suffolk Coast and Heaths. So many lovely villages, towns, farm shops, beaches and nature reserves within half an hour of Pegotty's Really livable, lots of utensils, products, storage. Along with nice touches left for you - tea, coffee, sugar, spices, logs for stove etc and a box of chocs). A ton of of tourist and practical info there for you too. Lots of facilities five minutes away in Saxmundham - including supermarkets, restaurants and train station. Poachers Pocket Pub is a nice walk and fantastic Sunday lunch. Only suggestion would be a larger TV. I appreciate that it's a period cottage and very well priced, but I still think 100% would be disappointed with such a small screen these days, when there's very little else to do in the evenings. All in all, an excellent value, well equipped, ideally located holiday cottage. Highly recommend.

Lovely cottage that had everything you could want and more.

Comfortable and warm, quiet and relaxing. A very big walking section on the shelf and a lot of time spent preparing such information and plans, maps and books available for the area. Appealed to us as walkers and we changed some of our plans after seeing better looking walks put there by the owners. Nice small garden to relax in at rest of property with summer house, never used as this was October/November, but in right months of the year, this would be appealing. Cottage situated in a good location, only a few miles from the coastal resorts and Sutton Hoo was also a good visit. Great inland towns and villages also only a few miles away, yes , cottage good for exploring this lovely County. Owners recommended the local pub for a meal, again spot on recommend. Would return.

    Framlingham Castle
Framlingham Castle in Suffolk was once a stronghold of the powerful earls and dukes of Norfolk. It is now owned by English Heritage and is open to the public to view. Activities include a castle wall walk, events and exhibitions. Cafe, Shop and family friendly.

    Orford Castle

In the dainty town of Orford lies the Grand Keep of the original Orford Castle. An historic piece of architecture that stands tall on the land and was originally built by Henry II to protect the port. Get dizzy from the spiral staircase and catch your breath for the great views overlooking Orford Ness.

    Dunwich Beach

The sea has slowly been nibbling away at the once thriving seaport of Dunwich. In the 14th Century it matched London in size and was the capital of the Kingdom and in the Domesday book of 1086 it's population was over 3000. Now around 240 inhabitants live in this historic village.
