What our customers say about their holidays

    • Catriona - Verified booking

The accommodation was clearly spectacular when first built but is now clearly suffering from wear and tear and a lack of maintenance.

Overall it’s looking quite tired! The following issues were noticed and should be addressed: There is a nail sticking up through the decking between the two front bedrooms. There is a decking plank sticking up on the deck outside the kitchen/dinette. Both of these pose a trip risk or could cause injury to anyone who is walking on the deck bare foot. The bath in the main bathroom has a faulty tap which switches the water from the taps to the shower head. In fact it is just sitting in the hole and is not connected. The bath plugs in both the main bedroom and the en-suite bathroom do not seal properly causing the water to drain away. Makes the baths virtually useless. The sink in the kitchen has the same problem. Whenever we tried to fill the sink to manually wash pots etc the water just drained away. Not only wasting hot water but also washing up liquid. The inner glazed panel of the top oven in the kitchen is loose and kept falling out when you tried to close the door. The securing catches are broken. The toaster in the utility room only works on one side and should be replaced. The lack of properly fitting blinds/curtains in the bedrooms means it is nearly impossible to get a decent sleep as the rooms are flooded in light from about 4am each night! The bedroom doors do not close properly meaning the had a habit of drifting open during the night. The travel cot supplied by the owner had a broken section in one of the corners. The edge of which could have caused injury to our baby granddaughters who are now able to stand up in their cots. Fortunately we brought an extra travel cot so didn’t use it! The house is listed as having Sky TV . There is a box and remote control but the box is not connected to the tv and there are no appropriate connection cables. A number of the chairs are very rickety and loose to sit on. I have noticed that some of these issues have been raised by previous clients and the owner has failed to rectify them. I am aware that the owner has put the property up for sale and the lack of maintenance clearly suggests that they have lost interest in the holiday let.

There were very few glasses in the property and the hair dryer did not work.

The tin opener was broken and the peeler didn’t peel. However the owner sorted these issues the day we raised it with him. However one of the reasons we chose this particular property was because it had WiFi. My daughter has exams next week and needed to study. Most of the revision materials are online. The WiFi wasn’t working for over a week which meant we had to buy extra data to enable her to study. This problem should have been brought to BT’s attention prior to the day of our arrival as the owner said he had been having issues with the broadband. The photos made the property look high end but in reality it wasn’t. The beds were very uncomfortable, even with the mattress toppers. Some of the slats were broken. The sofas were very low and awkward to get out of and again uncomfortable. One end of one sofa was broken. There were cracks in the floor tiles. The showers were dirty and mouldy. Some of the windows had mould in the corners. The set up wasn’t practical in terms of layout. The dining area next to the kitchen wasn’t big enough and the dining room was not close to the kitchen. There were lots of rugs which were trip hazards. One of the bar stools in the kitchen was assembled back to front! I would be interested to know if anyone from Sykes has actually stayed in this property. If so, did they also find the layout bizarre. Having a swimming pool is great, but it really wasn’t worth the money. Do you do an inventory or check that the property meets the minimum requirements? Unfortunately it was a poor experience.

Not suitable for elderly people or anyone with mobility problems.

(access only by stairs, baths very high sides, walk to village very steep) Sky and TV in living room not available remote for kitchen TV not working well. Some chairs in conservatory need replacing. Top oven door needs attention does not stay down when removing items. Master bedroom blinds need some attention no blinds on large semi-circle window sun directly on bed from 6-00am. Pool toilet floor sagging. Various door handles and shower taps need looking at. Decking needs cleaning very slippy when wet. However the pool was great and enjoyed by all. Nearby eateries excellent. Garden disappointing, no colour, no flowers. Plastic containers with Prunus trees disintegrating, need repotting or digging roots into ground. Lower branches rotting. Plastic Christmas tree (2022?) decoration in Hall, full cobwebs, bits of un- recyclable rubbish in wooden lidded bowl next to it. Planter to left of outside door contained plastic remainders of a previous Christmas. Balcony outside the small conservatory area needed moss and dead leaves removing from the decking before we could use it to sit outside. Two of the three planters on this balcony had obviously died and had been chopped back, leaving just ugly stumps. The third plant was dying too and ruined any view. No recyclable containers, only large red Biffa bin at entrance to property for all types of rubbish. Not easily accessible from first floor. Decking outside dining hall dangerously slippy after rainfall.

We had a great time, the pool was a big hit with the children and there was plenty of space for everyone.

This is a lovely house, but it is not luxury, to advertise as such leads to disappointment and complaints, it is a lovely well used house which needs some TLC. For us it was great as we didn't feel we had to be so precious as we would in an a luxury place. Needs immediate attention: Top oven internal glass was not attached and is dangerous. Leak under kitchen sink, we put a sausepan under it. Slats on one of the double beds are broken. Shower in JnJ bathroom had very little pressure, we used the shower in the gym instead. Advisory: mould on some of the blinds and windows in bedrooms need a clean. They rugs definately need lifting and hoovering underneath, I made the mistake of lifting one when hoovering -yikes! The sofa were very low and lacked any stuffing so hard to get out of for all of us. We also had an elderly lady and another (post op) on crutches, so not ideal. None of the above stopped us having a great time. We also booked a late check out at the time of bookng, this was confirmed by Sykes, only to be told the week before that we couldn't have one, this tarnish the end of the trip as we were all a bit rushed, we had to pack on the evening of the 26th. Then the cleaner arrive 15 minutes early - bit cheeky.

The cottage was in a great location.

However the kitchen was dark, freezing cold and smelled very badly of damp and so was unusable as a living space because of this. You had to brace yourself to head down into the kitchen as it was so cold and it made the rest of the house cold because it was open plan up to the livingroom. The central heating didn't work so you couldn't heat it up. Also the parking space was a nightmare, one of the reasons for choosing the cottage was because it had a designated space but we couldn't get the car in and out as owners round about parked all over the place and we ended up having to pay for parking for the whole week of our stay. You might be okay if you had a really tiny car but any normal.size car is not going to fit. Due to all off the above, we felt The Old Forge was very over priced accommodation in comparison to other places we have stayed.
