This part of East Neuk is dotted with quaint fishing villages, sandy beaches and picturesque seaside towns. The town of St Andrews is probably the most well known of them thanks to its famous university which was founded way back in 1410.

What our customers say about their holidays

A Cozy Retreat at West Cottage, Hill of Tarvit - A Mixed Bag of Experiences I recently spent seven days at the West Cottage, Hill of Tarvit, booked through Sykes Cottages.

Overall, it was a charming getaway with a few standout moments, but there were also areas where the experience could have been better. The Good: Location: The cottage is nestled in the beautiful grounds of Hill of Tarvit, offering a serene and picturesque environment. It’s perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in nature. Historical Charm: Staying within the estate of the Hill of Tarvit Mansion was an enriching experience. The opportunity to explore the mansion’s interiors and the surrounding grounds added a unique historical element to our stay. Private Garden: The enclosed garden at West Cottage was a lovely feature. We enjoyed setting up an outdoor tent and hot tub, which provided a nice way to relax and enjoy the outdoors, even when the weather wasn't ideal. Family-Friendly: The cottage worked well for a family holiday. The kids enjoyed exploring the grounds, engaging in various activities like a woodland walk, and even a pillow fight in the cottage. The spacious layout accommodated us comfortably. The Not-So-Good: Check-In Timing: The check-in time of 5 PM felt quite late, especially after a long journey. It would have been more convenient to have access to the cottage earlier in the day. Kitchen Facilities: While the kitchen was functional, it could have been better equipped. We ended up preparing a mix of home-cooked meals and takeout, but a few more utensils and appliances would have made cooking more convenient. Weather Considerations: As expected in Scotland, the weather was unpredictable, which slightly limited our outdoor activities. While the hot tub helped mitigate this, it’s worth noting that outdoor plans might need to be flexible depending on the weather. Communication: There was a minor hiccup in communication among our group, which led to some tension. It wasn’t related to the cottage or Sykes Cottages, but it’s a reminder to ensure clear communication when traveling in a group. Final Thoughts: West Cottage offers a lovely escape with plenty of historical charm and a peaceful setting. It's a great choice for families or small groups looking to unwind. However, be prepared for the Scottish weather and ensure you have everything you need for cooking if you plan to self-cater. The late check-in was a bit inconvenient, but overall, the stay was enjoyable, and we left with many fond memories of our time at Hill of Tarvit.

      The cottage was lovely.

Was extremely quiet so ideal if you want a break from hectic everyday life. We even opened the curtains one morning to see three beautiful deer very close to the garden fence. Very clean, everything you need, nice and warm (we did notice that extra heaters had been put in both bedrooms and the lounge, we assume because of previous feedback regarding the cottage not being warm enough). Unfortunately, because you cannot access the cottage until 5pm it was extremely dark and the outside lights were not working properly which made unloading our belongings difficult as the garden path to the door is quite long. Towards the end of our stay the lights appeared to work intermittently. During our stay, unlucky for us Storm Arwen hit! We had bought some logs and lit the fire beforehand so when the power cut at 6pm we did have some heat at least, and the gardener had kindly left firewood for us too. However, there was absolutely no light. You understandably cannot have candles in the cottage for insurance reasons, but the torch that had been left didn't work. I managed to speak to Mark who was listed in the welcome pack as an emergency contact and he very kindly arranged for a torch to be brought to us. The other big problem was, because the wind was so strong that night it was blowing back down the chimney and causing smoke and ash to fill the room which then triggered the smoke alarms in all the rooms. At one point it took 30 minutes (with the alarms continually going), to clear the room and we had to open all the doors to let the smoke disperse but of course this also meant all the heat escaped and all this in almost complete darkness. After the third time this happened we ended up having to let the fire die out and went to bed to keep warm. Other than Arwen we did enjoy our stay.

Rosalind and Brian were absolutely perfect hosts along with the one and only Bob the dog .

The welcome pack of coffee ,milk, home made jam , eggs from their own hens etc was most welcome . Thank you hens for laying them . The cottage is a perfect gem . If you like a rural location this is utterly the right place for you to stay . Walks around the cottage area are stunning . Take walking shoes / boots .The views are utterly incredible . Wildlife in abundance to be seen ( or heard re the Owls in our case !) The Katmoget sheep are entertaining to watch . The enclosed private garden is wonderful. We were very lucky with the weather during our stay. Lovely to be able to dry the washing outside on the line . It’s only a short drive down the road to Cupar to all the shops ,restaurants etc. Fisher and Donald’s fudge doughnuts or coffee tower are a must every time we visit the area and discovered there is a shop in Cupar . The Greenhouse Bar and Grill’s Sunday lunch is highly recommended- phone and book and reserve your roast though . The information re places to visit in the area , recommendations for other places to eat is all in the cottage . It’s easy to travel and explore the coast . We will most certainly be returning at the earliest opportunity.

We had a very peaceful but active holiday in this centrally based cottage.

Visited Hill of Tarvit Mansion; St Monan’s along to Crail with fish and chips in Anstruther; train trip from Cupar to Dundee to visit V&A (excellent free photography exhibition) and the McManus Museum; Falkland Palace; Wemyss Pottery in nearby Ceres (leaving with 2 smiling Rose Cabbage cats and a mouse!); walked up the steep but satisfying Hill of Tarvit on our last day and were rewarded with panoramic views of the coast and surrounding countryside; had an Indian takeaway from Saffron on Bonnygate Cupar (we phoned then picked it up) - very tasty and we’d recommend it. Rosalind welcomed us on arrival and had provided a DVD player at our request along with providing a cafetiere so we could use our filter coffee - she went beyond her role and was so friendly and accommodating and obviously wishing us to have a trouble free holiday - her eggs (from her hens) and jam were delicious. We will recommend the cottage to our friends as an excellent base to visit many areas of Fife easily.

Another wonderful stay at the Hill of Tarvit.

We were pleased to see lovely new sofas and WiFi this time. The garden was well kept and it was great to go and buy some fruit and veg from the newly installed larder on the estate. The cottage was cosy and relaxing as ever. The only downside was no hand wash in the toilet, which would have been nice as other National Trust cottages do this as standard, along with some welcoming dog treats, poo bags and food. Also, the ironing board cover is the same one as five years ago and it’s very thin, so when any clothes are ironed, the diamond metal pattern transfers onto clothes. These are, however, minor details and we all had a fantastic stay. The staff at Hill of Tarvit are very friendly and are always happy to help. It was great visiting our usual beaches and walks at Tentsmuir and St. Andrew’s as well as Culross Palace, up to see the Selkies and an absolutely delicious meal at the Dory restaurant in Pittenweem. We will hopefully be back again next year.
