What our customers say about their holidays

    • William - Verified booking

We had a very relaxing and enjoyable week in Little Gem.

Val and George are the perfect hosts, helpful and informative but never intrusive. The property was easy to find (look out for the blue ceramic plant pots at the entrance to the property), and parking was easy. There were chocolate biscuits, wine and cherry cake waiting for us on arrival – note to cottage-owners, this is much more welcoming than milk and tins of beans!!! The accommodation is light and airy, surprisingly spacious; quiet, comfortable, spotlessly clean, very well furnished and equipped. When we reported a problem with the toaster a replacement arrived almost immediately. The only occasional irritant was the fluctuating internet connection, all other facilities were excellent. And the bird-feeders opposite the kitchen window were a regular source of entertainment. Little Gem is well situated for a number of visits – Dryburgh and Melrose Abbeys are nearby, plus Abbotsford and Old Gala House museum; Smailholm Tower (an impressive Border Reivers' stronghold) and Flodden Field a little further. At Flodden the battlefield trail gives a real insight into the events of 1513, seeing the lie of the land explains a lot! There is also a tiny Information Centre in the adjacent Branxton village – housed in an old telephone kiosk. Other recommendations: ‘Why Not?’ deli and coffee shop in Galashiels is brilliant. And the Esso service station just before Galashiels was the cheapest for petrol. (St Boswells was consistently the most expensive in the area.)

A lovely hidden gem tucked away in the middle of the countryside yet 2 mins from a lovely village St Boswells with general shop, bookshop, cafe, deli, takeaways and restaurants.

Lots of places to visit including Kelso, Floors castle, loads of abbey ruins and other castles, Peebles, Jedburgh, Melrose and much more. The lodge itself is well kitted out with everything you need and the owners are on site and helpful with any queries. Secure for dogs too which was a bonus. Single beds very comfy, double bed maybe getting ready for an upgrade or mattress topper but still ok. Sofa's very comfy and bathrooms all good. Outdoor seating furniture provided and 2 areas to choose from. Plenty of parking on site and although there is an industrial estate not far away, if you look at the map then don't be put off as you wouldn't know it is there! We'll be back.

We were simply delighted to be staying at Little Gem.

We received the warmest of welcomes from the owner to this lovely accommodation which immediately felt homely and was very easy to live in. We would certainly like to return to this fascinating and very beautiful part of the country and wouldn’t hesitate to stay at Little Gem again. Our only fear is that companies will increase the cost of accommodation so disproportionately, cashing in on the popularity of home stays following Covid, that we simply won’t be able to afford it. We hope sincerely that this won’t happen as it has been just wonderful to have such a restorative holiday in the UK.

We had a great week at Little Gem - the owner's were so attentive and welcoming.

Our week was so fabulous our little cocker spaniel didn't want to leave and hid in the bedroom ha ha! The lodge has everything you could possible think of and more! The place was so comfortable and relaxing. We visited the local villages, Kelso, etc and spend the afternoon's relaxing! The garden is so enclosed for the dogs and I can imagine a great sun trap in the summer! We are eager to return hopefully later this year or next! Thank you so much for a fabulous stay.
