"Beechlands is a lovely house in a fantastic location. Sadly, however, we had a lot of problems, which were exacerbated by the cold and wet weather in early April. 1. The two radiators in the top bedroom weren't working properly and need bleeding - and only one of the three windows had blinds. So the room was very cold. And although the coloured ceiling lights are fun, they're not very practical or functional when it's dark. 2. There wasn't enough water pressure to have a hot bath in top bedroom. By the time the bath was 1/4 full the water had gone cold. 3. The underfloor heating in the conservatory - described as the perfect place to dry dogs and walking gear - wasn't working. 4. As we couldn't dry our coats in the conservatory, we thought we'd hang them on the hooks above the radiator in the ground floor bathroom. But that radiator wasn't working either. 5. There was no welcome manual with information about when the heating comes on, where to put the rubbish, when the rubbish gets collected, how to recycle stuff, etc. Just a laminated sheet of paper with a few basic details. 6. The radiator in the red ensuite bedroom wasn't working properly (the top half got warm but the bottom half didn't) and the radiator/heated towel rail in the ensuite didn't work at all. 7. The dishwasher was leaking.. 8. The kettle blew and tripped the electrics. 9. The DVD player in the room with the fire wasn't working. Luckily one of the guests, who is a bit of a technie, managed to sort out the scart leads and get it going. I emailed Helpful Holidays about the above on the 1st of April and Helen kindly got in touch with me. I also sent the housekeeper Mary Lou a text and she immediately sorted out a new kettle, a second duvee for the red bedroom and two electric heaters for the conservatory. She also offered to bleed the radiators but we were happy to do that once we had been given a radiator key. Once we were warm and dry, things got a lot better. Having been made aware of the problems, I'm sure the owners and Helpful Holidays will sort them out and future guests will have a lovely time."

"This is a great place to stay. An old farmhouse, so decor and furniture reflects this, but very well equipped. Bedrooms all large, except for the single one, and lots of space and storage. New kitchen which is very well equipped and spacious. Shelves full of books and lots of dvds to keep you occupied if weather bad. Lots of toys for children inside and out. Gardens to sit and watch the birds from. There is wifi and 2 tvs. This is on a farm, and so there are buildings around the house that are unsafe to go inside and so children do need to be supervised. The house and gardens are enclosed though and very safe. The location is rural, with no near town or village, and so normal noise and smells of the countryside are to be expected. Other than this it is blissfully quiet and scenic. Okehampton is 9 miles away, and has 3 supermarkets and a cinema. Exeter is about an hour away.Highly recommended for a large family group."

"The property was excellent. All 13 in our party were able to sleep in comfortable beds, and the property was plenty big enough so as for everyone to have their own space. All rooms were of a generous size and all traditionally decorated which was in character for its age. The kitchen had all the appliances and utensils in order to eat and dine in comfort and the dishwasher was made good use of! The back garden was excellent as was the barbecue, which again was made good use of. All in all, our stay was excellent, and was helped by the fact we had weather in the mid to high 70’s. We found the owners extremely helpful and approachable, and would have no hesitation in recommending the cottage. It was excellent value for money and we hope to visit again next year. June 2006."

"Our stay at East Down farm was very enjoyable. All though we had 13 in our party we had plenty of room. We found the owner had left bread, milk and a lovely homemade Victoria sandwich cake on our arrival. We had all the equipment we needed, plenty of crockery and cutlery and the dishwasher was very handy. Yes, the house is old, but it's very quirky. Our only complaint, if you can call it that, the house is a good few miles off any kind of main road and the lanes are very narrow and windy. We did eventually find a fairly decent route in and out which made the journey a little less hairy! There is also plenty parking at the house. We had four cars in the party and didn't struggle. Overall, an excellent holiday with plenty of places to visit."

"Toad Hall was a lovely old farmhouse in the Devon countryside with ample bedrooms, bathrooms and lounges for a large family group. The kitchen was large enough for us all to sit round the table and some of the family to sit on talking after the meal. There were also people staying in the nearby barn but they did not concern us. The separate games building was much used by the family and the younger children loved the swimming pool. The grounds and lake were pleasant to walk through although we didn't see the badgers. It is a drive to the coast and other sites but not too far. It is a pity the small Devon roads are so potholed and Devon Highways Department need to mend more of them."
