What our customers say about their holidays

    • Janet - Verified booking

We hadn’t thought about a holiday in this area of the U.

      K. and usually go camping at this time of year. Most places were reported to be very busy this year due to COVID 19 restrictions, so we booked this cottage. The cottage itself was very comfortable and clean and Lorraine, the owner was very welcoming and we were not disappointed. The cottage is ideal for couples. There is a shared courtyard and garden which has the sun all day and is very tranquil. We brought our bicycles and were able to park them undercover in the covered barn. We did not use the car at all during our stay and thoroughly explored the Vale of Glamorgan, the country single track lanes were very quiet and ideal for cycling. We visited Cowbridge and the Physic garden with medicinal plants from the 18th century, Llantwit Major and it’s dramatic beach. We travelled along the coastline to St Donat’s past Atlantic College where the likes of Charlie Chaplin and John F Kennedy stayed, visited Dunraven Castle, Ogmore by Sea (a peaceful spot when we visited, but made headlines due to a mass brawl post-Lockdown), Ogmore Castle, Ewenny Priory, Merthyr Mawr Warren, which is a beautiful natural area and climbed the Big Dipper (the second largest sandune in Europe), Porthkerry Country Park, Barry and Barry Island (the day before the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge). The closest beach is Monknash, a rocky beach with a footpath and a walk to get down to it, but it is well worth the effort. We also enjoyed watching the kart racing at Llandow Circuit nearby. Had we have been there longer, we would have perhaps visited Cardiff and Penarth. It was lovely to return to the cottage after a busy day sightseeing. The only downside for us was a slightly unstable internet connection and poor phone signal at times, but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment.

We don't usually submit reviews, however we felt that the description of this property oversold it and it was in need of some tender loving care.

The points we want to draw to the owner's attention are noted below: 1. Cleanliness - crockery, tea pot and cutlery needed to be washed prior to use. Previous guests appear to have merely rinsed these items and put them away rather than throughly wash them. The washing machine also dirty resulting in marks on light coloured clothing. Rubber door seal needed cleaning and perhaps too much washing powder was used in previous washes! Spiders webs with dust were found in the bedroom and bathroom. The radiator in the bedroom was full of hair and dust. 2. Shower- the thermostat could not be adjusted, paint splatters on the shower tray 3 Bedding - flannelette sheet and pillowcases on the bed, far too warm in the height of summer 4 Other internal issues - clock in kitchen not working, fridge freezer old, fridge door doesn't always close although there is a note on the fridge saying push to close, drawer in freezer had been broken and was glued back together rather than replaced, dificult to control temperature in fridge due to its age, either freezing or not cold enough. Fruit bowl on shelf broken and although kitchen well equiped we found a lot of chipped crockery. Kitchen stools too high to comfortably sit at the breakfast bar. 5. Back garden - weeds in back seating area. Recycling bins take up a lot of room and would benefit from being all together in a stacking device. 6. Parking- Its not a quiet street, its very narrow with cars parked on both sides and no turning space at the end. Parking was a challenge and other residents asked us to move our car from the door.

      Wow, wow, wow.

... what a gem Nuthatch Barn is, it was exceptionally clean, very well equipped and comfortable with everything I needed for my stay. The bottle of wine and welsh cakes were a lovely welcome touch too. It's in a fantastic, peaceful location just a short journey from Cardiff and Barry Island and many other wonderful locations like the Brecon Beacons, Porthcawl and Ogmore Beach (perfect for dogs all year round). Pontyclun is a short walk away and it was a picturesque walk at that. I loved that it was also on a working farm, it was wonderful to see all the sheep, lambs, cows and calves. I stayed for 5 nights with my 4 legged best friend and he appeared to enjoy his stay as much as I did. I cannot recommend Nuthatch Barn highly enough, Tim and Sally are the perfect hosts and I look forward to returning again soon.

Although not a problem for us, the narrow twisty stairs could be a problem for others and needs to be made more clear on the description.

The kitchen was very cold compared to the rest of the house - no heating unless we had the oven on for cooking dinner. Also very poor lighting in the kitchen in winter. The sofa was quite soft compared to what we are used to - not good for back support. It was lovely to have hot water for a shower, whatever time we got back - no waiting for it to heat up. The parking was limited. The location of the house was great - we never actually used our car for the whole week. Supermarkets, bus station etc all easily walkable. Plenty of places to eat out in town. Obviously, the surrounding countryside is wonderful and we did walks and cycle rides from the doorstep as well as using the bus to go a little further afield. We were blessed with good weather, which always helps!

We rented both Poppy Cottage and intially Ash Tree cottage, but then Lorraine offered us the larger Snowdrop cottage for no extra charge so that our group could be next-door to each other.

We were there for a week, and we were very impressed by the both cottages and the contents provided. (Lots of excellent cooking equipment!) The cottages are great for people shielding at the moment who want to go on holiday with extended family, as you can have your own inside space and lots of shared outside space. The location was great for visitng the local area and the Gower peninsula. We were able to eat outside every day, as there is a covered space opposite the cottages (which was not full of cars while we were there). Lorraine was extremely thoughtful and helpful, and easy to communicate with. A great holiday, we would certainly go back and recommend it to others.
