"Without a doubt, the first impression of Tatters barn is breathtaking. A lot of thought went into the design, original beams everywhere, well laid out, good furnishings and definitely has the wow factor. Really lovely bathroom, but the overhead shower very weak pressure. However for a property described as a “luxury cottage” there was a lack of attention to basic detail. Out of four bedside lamps, only one worked. On requesting replacements bulbs (which were provided immediately,) one lamp still did not work. Should have been checked before we arrived. As other visitors have also commented, I was amazed that there was an additional charge for the internet. The price stated is per device not a one off payment for connection which would have been bad enough. We had to top again as the vouchers only lasted two days. I have never come across this before, found it a bit penny pinching, a way to extract extra revenue at an inflated cost and unnecessarily annoying visitors. The property description says there is a bathroom/ toilet on the first floor with the bedrooms. This is not the case as it is four steps down from one of the bedrooms. When you open the bathroom door a blinding light comes on automatically as there are more steep steps down to the bathroom. The other bedroom, you have to go down the entire winding staircase to the ground floor to get to the other toilet. Very misleading and very annoying when you are half asleep. Not ideal in the middle of the night! The four poster was incredibly comfortable, but the other bed had a poor quality mattress which made you feel sea sick and had little support. Opposite the barn, there were three terriers that seemed to be enclosed in an outside pen most of the time, which at times barked for long periods. The area itself had very little places of interest and the local villages disappointing. Saving grace was Braintree shopping outlet which was 10 minutes away, where huge discounts were available and places to eat. If you like to shop, this is an amazing place to visit which we did several times and picked up some amazingly cheap bargains. Also a large Tesco about a mile away.On a positive note, in the Summer months, it would be lovely to use the private space available outside, ie bbq and garden. Also acres of land to go for walks and beautiful horses on the farm. Having enjoyed Holidaying in Country cottages all over the Country for over 30 years, Tatters barn was a welcome break but not somewhere we would wish to revisit."

"This is a very nice little cottage near Finchingfield. The rural setting with its own fishing lake, ducks and chickens is very agreeable. However, it is therefore quite a distance to the amenities in Finchingfield, we had to use the car to get the paper in the morning. The cottage is very well equipped, with a very spacious bathroom with nice blue-and-white tiles, and a very comfortable bed. The living space annex the well equipped kitchen is a bit small.Because all the windows were small and a bit high in the walls there is no view from the living space, other than overlooking the communal garden. The garden is to be shared with the owners, who live next door, but they are very nice people, so no bother about that.In short: a very amendable cottage, expecially for nature lovers who like the peace and quiet of a rural setting."

"Very disappointed, owners lovely but place dirty , I spent my first 3 hours there cleaning, bedfing damp, could not use cooker for 5 days as covered in rusted on inside, the owners nice and said they would clean it but look 5 days to do, freezer top of fridge broken so most of food in fridge got very very cold, drawers, cupboards all dirty, I do have pictures documenting this, it's was a nightmare when we arrived, but after 3 weeks of cleaning it ok, but everything damp and heating not great, tv broke but the nice owner brought us a new one with half an hour, the owners lovely but the place was sooo dirty, if l could have stayed else where I would but my daughter just had baby and very ill so really didn't have time to go hunting around, very dissapointed"

"We were made welcome by Helen & David. We found the accommodation was a bit chilly of an evening being that it was mid August. There was a small electric fire. It would have been nice if there were a few games to while away time when weather was wet and windy. The ground is quite large (ideal for twitters) and the lake would probably be used by keen fishermen. The location was a bit of a nightmare, road works and diversion signs, road closures. Diversion signs very misleading one pointing right the other left with no indication of what the end destination would be - ok if you are a native - About a mile away there is one pub Finchinfield Lion which serves a good meal. All in all our short stay wasn't too bad! WIFI kept dropping off."

"Rosemary Cottage is set in an idyllic, beautiful area. I have been here before, unfortunately, the cottage which joins on one side now has someone living there long-term and they are very noisy, having the TV much too loud (it adjoins the wall of Rosemary Cottage) and there was also a lot of banging and drilling going on. They also have washing hanging out alongside the cottages, which really does lower the tone of the cottages and the overall standard of the area. It's a shame, as usually the people renting the cottages are on holiday breaks and are, obviously, in holiday mood so it is usually very quiet, with people out enjoying the surrounding area rather than being in making alterations to the property."
