"Without a doubt, the first impression of Tatters barn is breathtaking. A lot of thought went into the design, original beams everywhere, well laid out, good furnishings and definitely has the wow factor. Really lovely bathroom, but the overhead shower very weak pressure. However for a property described as a “luxury cottage” there was a lack of attention to basic detail. Out of four bedside lamps, only one worked. On requesting replacements bulbs (which were provided immediately,) one lamp still did not work. Should have been checked before we arrived. As other visitors have also commented, I was amazed that there was an additional charge for the internet. The price stated is per device not a one off payment for connection which would have been bad enough. We had to top again as the vouchers only lasted two days. I have never come across this before, found it a bit penny pinching, a way to extract extra revenue at an inflated cost and unnecessarily annoying visitors. The property description says there is a bathroom/ toilet on the first floor with the bedrooms. This is not the case as it is four steps down from one of the bedrooms. When you open the bathroom door a blinding light comes on automatically as there are more steep steps down to the bathroom. The other bedroom, you have to go down the entire winding staircase to the ground floor to get to the other toilet. Very misleading and very annoying when you are half asleep. Not ideal in the middle of the night! The four poster was incredibly comfortable, but the other bed had a poor quality mattress which made you feel sea sick and had little support. Opposite the barn, there were three terriers that seemed to be enclosed in an outside pen most of the time, which at times barked for long periods. The area itself had very little places of interest and the local villages disappointing. Saving grace was Braintree shopping outlet which was 10 minutes away, where huge discounts were available and places to eat. If you like to shop, this is an amazing place to visit which we did several times and picked up some amazingly cheap bargains. Also a large Tesco about a mile away.On a positive note, in the Summer months, it would be lovely to use the private space available outside, ie bbq and garden. Also acres of land to go for walks and beautiful horses on the farm. Having enjoyed Holidaying in Country cottages all over the Country for over 30 years, Tatters barn was a welcome break but not somewhere we would wish to revisit."

"There were lots of little extra things if we had needed them. First aid kit, sewing kit, books, DVD's etc. The owners had tried to provide for all needs. They even left a jug of milk, some tea bags and a packet of chocolate biscuits for our arrival. I was impressed with the quality of the sheets too and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed our stay.Several lights needed bulbs replacing (not done by me) Washing up Liquid not obvious (bought by us) Above indicated to us that more care could be taken by the owners/cleaners when checking the property between tenancies.Dan - the owner - met us on arrival and was very nice and friendly: on leaving, he was not there, so we could not say goodbye. Vine Cottage is a purpose-built holiday venue (that is comfortable and immaculate) in a lovely village with a great, ancient local pub (The Bell Inn) and a handy volunteer-run shop, both within 70 yards. Two (very small) minuses are that the tiny bathroom sink is situated opposite the mirror rather than below it, and the TV could be larger. I would wholeheartedly reccommend Vine CottageExcellent stay in nice quite location and village. Owners very welcoming but didn't intrude. Large upstairs floor but if mobility a prob then the staires a bit steep but all in all a cottage worth visiting. Thnx"

"This should have been a fantastic property. Owners have neglected it. Cobwebs, dirty windows, overgrown enclosed garden, dirty towel, unemptied bins, lack of blinds and curtains just took the sparkle off our stay. The weather was great so we thoroughly enjoyed walking around the garden where there was a mowed route for people to enjoy. Not sure how much we would have enjoyed this had there been somebody in the neighbouring cottage which looks as open to being looked in on as the property we stayed in with the exception of the hall between the two wings which was all glass and no curtains (this is the only way from the downstairs bedroom to the downstairs bathroom), and the fact the next door cottage windows look straight into the conservatory. The conservatory is a great seating room with table tennis table and pool table. The granny annex was nice but isolated from the rest of the property with its own lounge and bathroom. We wanted a nice quiet getaway and it certainly was that."

"I enjoyed a lovely week at the two properties and would have rated them both higher if it was not for the lack of such things as basic condiments and tea bags etc. on arrival. Although there was a large garden area, there was only one croquet set with missing hoops to keep both youngsters and adults amused. We did buy a couple of outside games which we have left at the property for others. We have also left a supply of the basic condiments for the next family that follows us in. I had requested a cot which we thought had been forgotten but then found under seating two days into our holiday. I believe this is a fairly new holiday rental and so assume these to be teething problems. They are both lovely properties, well maintained and in a beautiful setting. I would recommend them to anyone that wishes for a quiet holiday away from the hurly-burly of modern living and away from busy roads."
