Mr Crane - verified booking

"As has been expressed in other reviews that I read on the site, the apartment was cold although adjusting the timer and thermostat solved some of this problem. A tip for the owner : Don't site your heating thermostat next to the radiator because whilst the hallway may be nice and warm it's actually 2-3 degrees colder in the lounge. Regrettably, the bathroom never got very warm - it's several degrees colder than the lounge - as it's a flat roof with a seating area for the owners above it and the resulting heat loss through the roof is considerable. It's also a good idea to keep the curtains drawn in the bedroom as the old sash window doesn't shut properly. It's clearly jammed slightly open and has been painted over. I'm surprised that when the extension was built, it wasn't replaced at the same time. Regardless, there is a horrendous draft through the gap between the two halves of the window. The TV seems subject to continual loss of signal. There is a DVD player not mentioned in the details so it might be an idea to bring some DVDs to watch as the TV is quite dated, doesn't have a USB socket and keeps cutting out. Curiously when the upstairs people are out, the TV works a lot better so maybe it's the wiring? As regards the kitchen, the oven could do with a good clean, the roasting tin and wire rack ditto. Two of the white dishes in the drawer hadn't been thoroughly cleaned. Sufficient dishes for two people as long as you use the small dishwasher frequently. Adequate but not exactly generously equipped. There is a hair dryer but this is not mentioned on the description so plus point for equipment, minus point for accuracy. You should add it to the description. Noise insulation is not great maybe because it's an old house? You can't fail to be aware that there are people living upstairs, particularly at 6am when they take a shower. The main saviour of this place is that it's a great location and an easy walk into the city centre. For that reason I would rate it as OK, but only just. There's nothing welcoming when you arrive, not even a card, cheap bottle of plonk or a few flowers, although curiously all of these seem to appear in the photographs on the website. As regards Sykes themselves, be aware that if you rent a place through them - or even enquire on their website - their marketing is aggressive and you should expect to be subjected to a torrent of unsolicited, persistent, unwanted, unecessary and nagging emails"

"We needed to take my mam , dad and their dog Ben on a holiday break that was within an hours drive of Manchester. My mam has arthritis , my dad has dementia ,limited mobility needing to use a wheel chair for longer distances .Finally, their dog cannot be let off the lead as he runs away and may not come back !!!!Simon and Julie were their to greet us as we arrived ; they couldn't have been more helpful !!! The cottage both inside and out together with the grounds and surroundings were actually better than the pictures on the website could show! The fixtures, fittings, equipment in the cottage were second to none. But most importantly, this was not just a holiday cottage, Julie had been meticulous in making this cottage into a home from home. The details, the history, the giant who had lived there, the atmosphere made the cottage magical! To top it all off, the beautiful large garden was fully enclosed .Ben the dog was able to run freely ,spending time watching the two ponies in the padlock next door while we had our binoculars watching the planes coming into land at the local airport ! And no,the planes weren't very noisy, were infrequent and watching them was quite exiting, particularly the small propeller planes !!! We didn't leave the village for the four days we were there. We didn't need to. This was about giving my mam and dad a very special holiday experience they thought they may never have again. This holiday was fare beyond our expectations !!!!!!!Thank you to Julie and SimonFrom David, Paul ,Ron, Joan and Ben the dog"

"If I needed to be in Hale for any reason in the future, I'd definitely stay here again. The owners live very near, and are absolutely lovely people. The house was very clean and tidy, and the garden is large, fully enclosed (great if you have a dog!) and lovely. As far as areas for improvement, I just have a few comments: 1. less perfumed spray throughout the house - it was overpowering - ESPECIALLY on the bed (I think the bedding was sprayed, and it was way too strong for me). 2. The house was lovely and warm, but the master bedroom is quite cold (not surprising for a 300 year old cottage!). I'd recommend having some extra heavy blankets available, rather than just the one, very thin one in the closet. Luckily, I wasn't using the 2nd bedroom, so I was able to use one of the duvets in that room on my bed. 3. Having a cafetiere available for people who like "real coffee" would be great. They're small, cheap, and would be a welcome addition. ;-)Other than those three, minor things, it was a truly lovely cottage and a good experience. Kudos to the owners!"

"We stayed at the cottage as a family of 3 with our 2 dogs. It is a very spacious cottage with a lovely feel. I can honestly say that the pictures do not do it justice. It was perfect, everything in the cottage is very good quality and the beds were very comfortable. The garden too was also perfect for our dogs with a large enclosed wrap around garden. The village its self has 2 dog friendly pubs. The Childe of Hale pub is less than 5 minutes away and you can eat in the bar area with your dogs. There is also a general store and a post office and some lovely walks in the area. I would definitely recommend this cottage. Finally, Simon and Julie are excellent hosts, nothing is too much trouble. Hats off to you"
