"Without a doubt, the first impression of Tatters barn is breathtaking. A lot of thought went into the design, original beams everywhere, well laid out, good furnishings and definitely has the wow factor. Really lovely bathroom, but the overhead shower very weak pressure. However for a property described as a “luxury cottage” there was a lack of attention to basic detail. Out of four bedside lamps, only one worked. On requesting replacements bulbs (which were provided immediately,) one lamp still did not work. Should have been checked before we arrived. As other visitors have also commented, I was amazed that there was an additional charge for the internet. The price stated is per device not a one off payment for connection which would have been bad enough. We had to top again as the vouchers only lasted two days. I have never come across this before, found it a bit penny pinching, a way to extract extra revenue at an inflated cost and unnecessarily annoying visitors. The property description says there is a bathroom/ toilet on the first floor with the bedrooms. This is not the case as it is four steps down from one of the bedrooms. When you open the bathroom door a blinding light comes on automatically as there are more steep steps down to the bathroom. The other bedroom, you have to go down the entire winding staircase to the ground floor to get to the other toilet. Very misleading and very annoying when you are half asleep. Not ideal in the middle of the night! The four poster was incredibly comfortable, but the other bed had a poor quality mattress which made you feel sea sick and had little support. Opposite the barn, there were three terriers that seemed to be enclosed in an outside pen most of the time, which at times barked for long periods. The area itself had very little places of interest and the local villages disappointing. Saving grace was Braintree shopping outlet which was 10 minutes away, where huge discounts were available and places to eat. If you like to shop, this is an amazing place to visit which we did several times and picked up some amazingly cheap bargains. Also a large Tesco about a mile away.On a positive note, in the Summer months, it would be lovely to use the private space available outside, ie bbq and garden. Also acres of land to go for walks and beautiful horses on the farm. Having enjoyed Holidaying in Country cottages all over the Country for over 30 years, Tatters barn was a welcome break but not somewhere we would wish to revisit."

"This cottage is delightfully quiet and tucked away, close to the river. A bright airy conversion has resulted in a modern and fantastically equipped venue incoproating all the essentials one would expect down to several luxaries including a piano! The property is very clean and warm, but if required there is a wood burner stove for added heating. We didn't need it as the electric heating was more than adequate to meet our needs. The living space was bright and airy and had a couple of long sofas which allowed us to lounge about as if we were at home. [Makes a change from those rental properties where the ability to relax is hampered by the inadequate seating arrangments!]The open plan lay-out of the building meant that the kitchen was to one end of the building with a very large breakfast bar and preparation surface into which the induction hob had been integrated and a micro-wave cooker placed to one end, whilst opposite was another workspace with sink and cupboards above. More than enough space to prepare and eat a meal. As an alternative there was a dining table and 6 chairs which could be utilised for meals leaving the breakfast bar for sprad-out preparation. The bedroom, whilst small in size was adequate and comfortable, as was the double bed. A wardrobe and a very large chest of drawers provided ample storgae space for clothes. This property allows pets and our dog was bowled over by being able to have a whole field to run around in and explore, not to mention the walk along to dyke at the side of the river. Pure dog heaven. We have to mention that the welcome we received from Jean (who looks after the property) was more then we could have expected. Due to delays we arrived late at the property but she had waited for our arrival and immediately made us a cup of tea with biscuits and was at great pains to make sure that we had everything we needed before she departed. Doesn't happen very often and we were really made to feel welcome which was a brilliant start to our stay.If I had any niggles, it was that the hot water didn't get very hot, but this was a minor point which we mentioned at the end of our dtay andf I suspect that this problem will have been sorted out within hours of our departure, such was the apparent desire to provide top rate facilities.Would we stay there again? Without a doubt, and we're already looking at the calendar to find a suitable date. Thanks again to all those asscoiated with GROVE WOOD COTTAGE."

"The location is brilliant. Peaceful. We stayed at this cottage in 2014 and it was excellent however 4yrs on and it is looking tired. Patio is full of weeds and the garden furniture had better days. This is a no smoking property but the chimnea was full if cigarette ends. BBQ was dirty. Inside there were big black cobwebs over the ceiling and velux Windows. By the time we left we had weeded some of the patio and cleaned the chimnea and BBQ out. We also cleared the cobwebs. The inside is looking tired and needs a lick of paint. The toilet flush was not working great when we arrived and we were using a kitchen utensil to press the flush. By the 4th day we were using a saucepan to fill with water to flush the toilet. We did contact the housekeeper and a plumber came to have a look on the day we left. This cottage is a lovely little gem and it's a shame because it's now looking unloved."

"We were so glad that we chose this cottage for the Easter weekend . The cottage itself is extremely comfortable and very well equipped. The grounds were ideal for our collie to run around, mostly meadow but also woodland which was full of wildlife, and the views from the cottage are amazing. The River Crouch is quite close, with a variety of boats and water birds, and a stunning walk along the sea wall leads to the lovely town of Burnham on Crouch. We especially enjoyed a trip on the Burnham Ferry to Wallesea Island, where we spotted seals and had a wonderful walk along the coast path.We had a very warm welcome from Jean on arrival, and all the other people we met over the weekend were so friendly. We are already planning to return to Grove Wood Cottage as soon as we can."

"As we took our two dogs it was well positioned next to the country park for walks and exercise. I failed to notice there was no enclosed area for them on the details. The barn conversion is cute but the white wooden floor boards are noisy and with gravel drive entering into the barn this was a challenge to keep clean. Decorated in a charming way particularly if you had 2 small children to sleep in the cupboard room which had fairy lights. I do not think it is suitable for dogs. Well positioned for London. Very pretty position but not sure what it would be like in the summer being right next to the horses and with limited ventilation. This is a central cottage of 3 and beware that the walls are very thin."
