About this property

Nestled in a hamlet in the Ceirog valley, less than 100 yards across a rolling grass field from the river Ceirog, Pear Tree Cottage is a detached stone country cottage which is a haven of peace. Afforded stunning views from the open front lawn up the wooded river valley into the hills of Wales. In an area rich with history, the cottage itself is a part of that, originally built in the 1790s as the foremans cottage for the quarry which provided the stone for Chirk aqueduct (around a bend in the river). Ideal for walkers, trail bike riders, mountain bike riders, explorers of Shropshire and North Wales, families or anyone looking to escape to the clean air of the countryside. The area is packed with stunning walks and things to do right from the front door, including beautiful walks alongside the river, Offa’s Dyke less than a mile away, Chirk Castle and Oswestry hill fort. Canal enthusiasts will find the engineering marvel of Llangollen canal less than a mile away, with world heritage site Pontcysyllte Aqueduct a 10 minute drive away. The well-provisioned small market town of Chirk is a mile away, and the larger towns of Oswestry, Llangollen and Wrexham are all a 15 minute drive away, so getting away to the country need not mean giving up provisions and conveniences. Be welcomed straight into the lovely country kitchen with solid oak worktops and shelf, which is host to a large electric range cooker and attractive cream units, with an array of appliances to make use of here during your stay, along with a cute extendable dining table and chairs by the window. Step into the utility area of the kitchen to find a washing machine, dryer and dishwasher, before turning right to find the lovely ground-floor bathroom with marble sink and floor, complete with a large bath and overhead shower. Continue into the sitting room to delight in the warmth and atmosphere of the wood burning stove with stylish designer furniture and Moroccan pouffes, you can choose to play one of the classic original board games from the shelf, chess on the olive chess board, pick up a book, or watch TV as you relax on the sofas. From here, throw open the patio doors to let that fresh country air in, with a Mediterranean-style patio space all to yourself, and a rustic outdoor log burner for those serene evenings with a glass of wine. When searching for sleep, travel up the stairs passing more original artwork on the walls, and discover a charming double bedroom with a handmade oak bed, full length antique mirror from Rajasthan, and an en-suite basin and WC panelled with rescued oak from the pews in a local church, while the second room is a delightful twin with a beautiful and uniquely painted chest of drawers to store your belongings in. The location of Pear Tree Cottage is ideal for those seeking easy access to some excellent walking routes, with the famous Offa's Dyke Path which loosely follows the border between England and Wales, actually through neighbouring Bronygarth, so with Chirk railway station connecting to Chester and Birmingham, you can embark on walks right from your doorstep, no need for a car! The centre of Chirk is around one-mile away, so you can delight in leisurely strolls into town to browse the charming local offerings in the form of cafes, tearooms, restaurants and pubs, providing all you need for a self-catered stay, alongside shops for food and essentials.Take a walk over to the Chirk Aqueduct, part of the Llangollen Canal World Heritage site, stretching 710 ft long and carrying the canal 70 feet above the beautiful River Ceiriog, it's a great spot for a holiday snap and an amazing feat of engineering! Very similar to the world famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which itself is just a 10-minute drive away. Don't miss the chance to visit the wonderful Chirk Castle, run by the National Trust, home to 5.5 acres of stunning manicured gardens, part of the 480 acres of estate parkland, with the castle construction beginning round 1295, it holds a wealth of history and charm awaiting to be discovered! Explore the scenic Ceiriog Valley, or head to Moel Y Gamelin for a trail up this sizable hill with gorgeous, scenic views, with the Llandegla moors being a popular spot for mountain biking too. Nearby Oswestry, Llangollen, Wrexham and Shrewsbury are all bustling towns worth visiting for a wider choice of amenities and plenty of shopping. The whole of North Wales is easily accessible to explore as the property is close to the main North Wales arteries of the A5 and the A483. Make wonderful memories on the Wales/England border at Pear Tree Cottage.

Chirk is a small town resting on the border between Wales and England, officially part of the county of Wrexham, it stands on the escarpment where the rivers Ceiriog and Dee meet. Known as The Gateway to Wales, Chirk is famed for Chirk Caste, a 14th century fortress and gardens, along with the aqueduct. The town is home to a handful of shops, pubs and restaurants, and sits close to the wonderful Offa's Dyke Path, offering a great base for walkers.
