About this property

Resting on the edge of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in the picturesque village of Penrhyndeudraeth is this two-bedroom semi-detached quarryman's cottage, Bodorwel Cottage. Ideal for steam engine enthusiasts, the cottage backs onto the renowned Ffestiniog Railway and enjoys sights of the train chugging past during late March to October. The property itself is steeped in history, with part of the building enjoying a stone-built exterior and dating back to 1851. You'll notice this as you park up in the roadside parking space, before taking in the rest of the delightful surroundings, including views of Foel Penolau. Make your way inside and hang your things up in the hallway, before being welcomed by a sitting room brimming with charm, thanks to its plush furnishings and train memorabilia peppered throughout; kick back and relax on the seating and enjoy a show on the Smart TV, all the while being warmed by the flames of the woodburning stove. Continue through to the kitchen/diner, a traditional space which offers plenty of appliances to make mouth-watering meals with, including an electric cooker. Once these tasty dishes have been made, enjoy them at the corner table, or take them outside to the garden, where you can watch the steam trains go by as you dine alfresco. As the day winds to a close, climb the stairs to find two lovely double bedrooms, one of which enjoys views over the rooftops and towards the mountains, whilst the other features dual aspect windows, with views out to the garden. The shower room is nearby and is where you can enjoy an invigorating rinse before heading out to explore the area. Head into the centre of Penrhyndeudraeth, where all your amenities can be found, including a convenience store and a range of eateries, such as The Eating Gorilla; the town is also home to the Gwaith Powdwr North Wales Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, where plenty of walking and birdwatching can be enjoyed. Travel towards the coast and visit Porthmadog, where you can actually board the Ffestiniog Railway and run through Eryri's (Snowdonia's) enchanting scenery or stay in the town to explore the Maritime Museum, the idyllic harbour and the nearby sands of Borth y Gest. Be sure to pay the Italianate village of Portmeirion, a place that is well-known for its vibrant and gorgeous architecture, along with walks spanning along the coast and a range of independent shops. Spend some time in Blaenau Ffestiniog, where direct access to the National Park's outdoor havens as well as the fantastic Zip World Llechwedd can be found. With so much to see and do nearby, Bodorwel Cottage is a fantastic stay for you and your loved ones.

Penrhyndeudraeth is a sizable village with a variety of shops, restaurants, a Post Office, and a railway station that runs along the Ffestiniog Railway. The famous distinctive Italianate town of Portmeirion, which was the setting for the TV show The Prisoner and is bordered by sandy beaches and enchanting forests, is only two miles away. Penrhyndeudraeth is a great site to visit if you want to see the Llyn Peninsula, Snowdonia National Park, or other parts of North Wales.

Listings were completely accurate and the accommodation had more than enough finishing touches to make us feel right at home. The cakes were very much appreciated (my partner and I are vegan but the person we were travelling with was more than happy to find a home for them

The mattress in the dual aspect bedroom had a raised bump right down the middle (unsure if this could be due to support of the bed frame) but it didn't cause any sleep disturbances. Overall we both loved the cottage, ideal location for visiting other areas by train and my son loved how close the heritage railway went by

Small fridge - we struggled to fit in our food for even a few days.
