The Mawddach Trail is a spectacular walking and cycle route that winds along the disused railway track on the southern edge of the Mawddach estuary, from Dolgellau to Barmouth. Bikes can be hired in the town at the start of the route. The town is also home to Cymer Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery which is certainly worth visiting. Immerse yourself in local history at King Arthur’s Labyrinth and Llanfair Slate Mines or experience more of a challenge by hiking to the summit of Snowdon. The Falconry Experience, set in 120-acres of Welsh countryside, provides a day out for the whole family, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with a variety of birds of prey including Owls, Hawks and Bald Eagle. This charming little market town is situated in southern Snowdonia, halfway between the sea and the massive Cader Idris mountain range. It's a fantastic home base for a vacation, ideal for combining the many outdoor activities available in Snowdonia with leisurely days at Barmouth, Fairbourne, and Aberdovey's soft sand beaches. The town itself has a good assortment of stores, five pubs, a wine bar, as well as many top-notch cafes, restaurants, and bakeries that daily produce fresh bread and pastries. Dolgellau is said to have the highest concentration of listed buildings in all of Wales, with over 200 of them, and it has been classified as a "cycling break centre," with several specific cycle routes running through the town. The Coed y Brenin mountain bike trail is nearby, and the area is perfect for peaceful outdoor activity because it is close to mountains, forests, waterfalls, castles, and beaches.
