Maindy Lodge is a well-equipped house that sits in the heart of Ton Pentre in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Offering a practical base for families and friends who want to explore this vibrant valley setting, the location places guests within easy reach of local conveniences, with a shop and a pub nearby and the river just stones throw from the door. Maindy Lodge is an end‑of‑terrace former miner’s cottage dating back to the mid‑1800s, set in the heart of Ton Pentre. Roadside parking is available nearby and generally easy to find, allowing you to arrive and head straight inside. Stepping through the front door, the hallway leads you into the main living spaces.
A step up brings you into the sitting room, a straightforward and flexible area arranged for shared use. Three sofas sit around the room, two of which convert into sofa beds, making this a practical space for larger groups. You might switch on the TV for background company, sit with a book or board game, or spend a little time at the piano before the evening settles in. From the sitting room, you move through to the dining room, where the focus naturally shifts to coming together. The dining table seats up to 14, making it well-suited to relaxed group meals, celebratory dinners or slow breakfasts before heading out into the valley.
It’s an easy space to gather, whether you’re laying the table or lingering over a drink after supper. A step down leads into the kitchen. Compact and easy to navigate, it’s set up for everyday cooking, with an electric oven and hob ready for simple meals. The fridge freezer keeps supplies close at hand, while the kettle, toaster and coffee maker help shape easy mornings and late‑night cups of tea. Just beyond, the utility area houses a washing machine, adding practicality for longer stays. On the ground floor, the bathroom includes a bath with a shower over, basin and WC, ideal for winding down at the end of the day.
Upstairs, a separate shower room with a walk‑in shower, basin and WC helps keep things running smoothly for groups. Please note that the stairs leading to the first floor are steep, so care is advised. Upstairs, four double bedrooms offer simple, comfortable places to settle in, each with a wardrobe for unpacking and storage. One of these doubles leads through to the fifth bedroom, which contains the bunk beds, meaning access to the bunk room is via one of the double bedrooms, a layout that works particularly well for families. Together, the rooms provide a calm end to days spent out exploring.
Beyond the house, shops are within walking distance, making it easy to pick up essentials or call in locally, while the surrounding area is well-suited to walking, with riverside routes and valley paths close by. Within an hour of Maindy Lodge, a variety of days out open up across South Wales. You could travel north to the Brecon Mountain Railway, where vintage steam trains carry you along the edge of the Brecon Beacons, passing reservoirs, open hillsides and wide skies, a relaxed way to take in the landscape without needing to lace up your boots. To the south, St Fagans National Museum of History invites you to wander between historic Welsh buildings, watch traditional crafts in action and explore stories of everyday life woven into the country’s past.
Closer to home, Rhondda Heritage Park offers a powerful insight into the area’s mining history, with underground tours and exhibitions that bring the valley’s industrial story to life through the voices of those who lived it. With its central village setting, flexible sleeping arrangements and easy access to walking routes and regional attractions, Maindy Lodge offers a practical base for exploring the Rhondda Valley and the wider Welsh landscape.
Ton Pentre is a characterful valley village resting between Pentre and Treorchy in the Rhondda Fawr. Historically shaped by the coal industry, the village is known for its strong industrial heritage, traditional terraced streets and close‑knit community, and offers a small but varied choice of local amenities centred around Church Road and the surrounding residential streets. Dining options include The Windsor Arms (CF41), a traditional local pub with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere serving classic pub meals and drinks, and The Crispy Cod in Gelli, a popular takeaway restaurant known for generous portions of fish and chips alongside familiar comfort‑food favourites. You can stock up on essentials at Spar Ton Pentre or at Lidl in Treorchy. Just along the valley, Treorchy provides additional cafés, independent shops and community spaces, as well as the Park & Dare Theatre, a popular local venue hosting live music, comedy and touring productions throughout the year. For outdoor exploration, the surrounding hills and valley sides offer easy access to scenic walking routes, including paths leading towards Pen Pych, a well‑known local viewpoint with far‑reaching views across the Rhondda and beyond. A short drive away is Pontypridd, home to Ynysangharad War Memorial Park and Rhondda Heritage Park, which together offer riverside walks and a deeper insight into South Wales’ mining past, making it a rewarding day out. Also within an hour is Cardiff, where Cardiff Castle and the Cardiff Bay waterfront combine historic landmarks with vibrant food, culture and waterfront walks, making the capital an appealing destination for a full day of exploration.
