Snaptrip says

Kirk Cottage is praised for its cosy charm, cleanliness, and beautiful, peaceful location. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities, comfortable furnishings, and the warm welcome from the owners and locals. The remoteness and lack of mobile signal are noted, with some guests relishing the disconnection. The property is dog-friendly, with many enjoying the surrounding walks.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The cottage receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning its tidy and well-kept state. Guests consistently describe the property as clean, which suggests meticulous maintenance.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity, with guests loving the remote setting and scenic walks. However, the distance from shops and the lack of mobile signal are seen as drawbacks for some, slightly lowering the score.

Comfort is frequently highlighted, with guests finding the bed comfy and the cottage cosy, especially with the log burner. The steep stairs and low door lintel are minor concerns for some, but overall, the comfort level is rated highly.

Facilities are generally well-received, with particular praise for the kitchen and bathroom. Some guests suggest improvements like additional pillows and outdoor furniture cleanliness. The lack of mobile signal and Wi-Fi is a recurring theme, but not all guests view this negatively.

While some guests mention receiving gifts such as shampoo, conditioner, and soap, there is not enough consistent information across the reviews to accurately score thoughtfulness. It is also important to note that such gifts are not guaranteed.

About this property

A cosy, end-terrace cottage situated in the quiet hamlet of Hownam, nine miles from the town of Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Comfortably furnished, Kirk Cottage makes an ideal peaceful retreat for two, where you can make a lovely cooked meal in the kitchen before enjoying it in the dining area, and then relax with a glass of wine in front of the woodburning stove in the sitting room. Outside, there’s an enclosed decked area, a perfect place to sit and unwind with a good book or dine alfresco after a day’s walking, cycling or round of golf, with the nearest course just ten miles away. There is also very limited light pollution here, so on crisp nights, why not settle to stargaze beneath the night's sky, before heading back inside to cosy up beside the fire? Situated on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, this wonderful cottage is a great base as there’s plenty of walking and cycling in the area, along with fishing on the nearby River Tweed, by local permit. The lovely Border towns of Jedburgh and Kelso are close by and are well worth a visit, plus there are a number of other excellent villages and towns to visit in the area, and Edinburgh is just over an hour’s drive away. This superb Borders cottage promises to be an ideal romantic break at any time of the year. EPC Rating: Band F

The hamlet of Hownam is situated close to both Jedburgh and Kelso and has a Post Office and church. There are a number of walks and golf in the area, and the towns of Jedburgh and Kelso provide a number of shops and pubs. There are other delightful towns and villages within reach, and Edinburgh and Newcastle are within driving distance.

As described it is very remote. Ideal location for walking in the beautiful countryside.

Peaceful location, we did lots of walks direct from the cottage, maps and directions are included in the guest pack. Per other reviews there is no phone or data signal, which we looked forward to when booking, but have to say that the WiFi in cottage was excellent, we were able to stream from netflix in the evenings (though there is a TV and good dad selection). Would definitely stay here again.
