About this property

This is a superb and spacious stone cottage, ideal for families or couples, with two stylish bedrooms and two bathrooms, located in the village of Fortingall in beautiful Glen Lyon, surrounded by stunning Perthshire scenery. Part of a charming courtyard conversion of old farm buildings, 'steadings', the Salmon House used to be the smokery for the salmon from the nearby river Lyon, which flows into the Tay. The owners have created a tastefully furnished and comfortable holiday home providing an excellent base for touring and walking, or just relaxing. The Fortingall Hotel is across the courtyard from the cottage as is the famous Yew, at over 3,000 years old, supposedly the oldest living tree in Europe. On arriving at the Salmon House you will be treated to homemade Scottish shortbread laid out ready on the table in the fully equipped kitchen. Milk, tea and coffee are provided to get your holiday started. The lounge dining area is furnished with a comfortable sofa and chairs around a wonderful wood-burning stove which fills the house with warmth, even in the dead of winter. A basket of wood is provided, and the fire laid for immediate use. The dining table is great for jigsaws and games, and the sideboard beneath the widescreen TV has a wide range of DVDs and games for evenings in front of the fire. Patio doors lead out onto a mature private garden, which is often visited by pheasants and red squirrels living in the woods behind the garden. Timber steps lead up to a shared lawn where you may be lucky enough to see the local Roe and Red deer. Patio furniture and a BBQ are provided to ensure a relaxing stay. On the first floor, there are two large bedrooms, one with a king size bed and the other with twin large single beds, separated by a well-lit landing. Each room has been tastefully furnished with an armchair or sofa, chests of drawers, and oak cupboards with plenty of hanging space. The double bedroom is dual aspect, with a sash window overlooking the courtyard with wonderful views of the Fortingall Yew, the fields, and Drummond Hill beyond. Accessed from the first floor there is fully tiled family bathroom with a bath-shower, WC and basin. The downstairs shower room also has a wonderful walk-in shower, WC and basin. Guests are provided with monogrammed towels including extra large and fluffy bathsheets. The Salmon House has a peaceful courtyard location in the picturesque Arts & Crafts village of Fortingall, about 8 miles from Aberfeldy. One of Scotland's prettiest villages, Fortingall is surrounded by the glorious landscapes of Highland Perthshire, spectacular mountains, and is only 2 miles from the north shores of Loch Tay. Outside the courtyard is the renowned Fortingall hotel with the Ewe bar, suberb cuisine, and a ready welcome. Opposite the hotel is church and the famous Fortingall Yew, an ancient yew tree within the walls of the churchyard, believed to be the oldest tree in Europe at over 3,000 years old. Walk or cycle in beautiful Glen Lyon, fish in the spectacular Loch Tay or spend time visiting the shops, cafes and bars in nearby Aberfeldy, Pitlochry or Dunkeld. This is a delightful cottage with something for everyone throughout the year.

The village of Kenmore sits at the eastern end of Loch Tay where the River Tay flows out of the loch and dates from the 16th century. Originally built on the north side of the river, it was moved in the mid-sixteenth century to accommodate a castle being built on the north shore. The relocation gave the village its current name reflecting its position on a large headland: Kenmore – ‘large head’ in Gaelic. It is Loch Tay that makes Kenmore such a popular tourist draw today with the many watersports, fishing, hillwalking and cycling activities on and around the loch. The village has shops, a couple of hotels and a restaurant and with the attractive towns of Aberfeldy, Pitlochry and Dunkeld nearby, the tourist is very well provided for.
