About this property

A holiday where you can chill out, enjoy the beauties of the loch, a sandy cove, and all that nature can offer.. Vindolanda is a charming, characterful holiday cottage perfect for a family, two couples or just one couple. It’s set within a tiny hamlet of a few croft houses called Fearnbeg, only a few steps away from its own sandy cove, which is perfect for children to explore. The aspect of Vindolanda in Fearnbeg is outstanding. From almost every room you look out across Loch Torridon to the mountains, often snowcapped throughout the year. We’re not exaggerating when we say the view out of the window is like a moving painting. The little track down to the cottage is perfectly fine to drive down, and there’s parking just out the front. A set of stairs lead up to the front door through a small enclosed garden. Entering Vindolanda you are immediately struck with the space and abundance of natural light pouring in from the sea loch side. The taste and finish of the property is also very pleasing.

From the entrance hallway you get the feeling of symmetry with two very similar sized room either end of the cottage. To the right, the northern end, there is a very spacious and comfortable dining room that’s dual aspect and has an open fire. And to the left, the southern end there is a charming and comfortable living room, again with an open fire and dual aspect. Between these two lovely rooms is the farmhouse-style kitchen and the stairs leading to the first floor. The landing upstairs has a vaulted side, so acts as a mezzanine above the hallway on the ground floor. It’s a clever and pleasing feature because it adds so much light to the first floor. At either end of the house on the first floor there are double bedrooms, both with amazing and truly unrivalled views, and also both decorated in a complementary style. Between the rooms upstairs is a spacious family bathroom.

Vindolanda means ‘white lawns’ or ‘white fields’, and if you are visiting in winter, you’ll likely experience the beauty of a snow covering, and you won’t want to be anywhere else. You will spot dolphin, seal, porpoise, otter, golden and sea eagle, red deer and pine marten from the cottage. At night, when it’s clear, you’ll have experience some of the best star gazing in Europe. You can spend a whole week just being at the cottage, walking to the sandy cove, heading off on foot or bicycle to explore more of the coastline. It’s an explorers’ paradise.

With Applecross village just over 10 miles away, you have access to a fabulous inn, the famous walled garden restaurant as well as a shop and brilliant café. And the 10 mile journey to the village will be the slowest of your life, because there’s so much to stop and see, and explore en route. Plus also the free roaming Highland cattle that will no doubt stop you in your tracks. If you did want to go further afield though, Torridon is only 40 minutes away and Skye 90 minutes for a day trip. However, Applecross really is the Highlands location you’ve been dreaming about, so you don’t need to leave the peninsula. You’ll come for a week and want to stay forever. Beach 3 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 13 miles.. 5 steps to entrance.

The cottage was fine, clean and had pretty much everything you need. There were creepy noises in the bedroom at night coming from the attic/roof which was a bit disturbing. The write up on cottages.com reads that you can see all sorts of wildlife from the cottage when in reality you cannot. The only thing we saw were seals. The main reason we booked this cottage in the middle of nowhere was to see wildlife when in fact we saw more on the drive home. Disappointed to say the least. We would never have chosen to be so far away from even a shop or a restaurant but for the promise of seeing wildlife. We were lucky with the weather and managed to do a bit of walking but that again in hard work in that area due to the boggy ground. We wouldn’t go back.

Cosy home with all you need for a comfortable stay on the Applecross peninsula. Perfect location to use as a base as you discover the area, and even if you just fancy relaxing indoors, the views out of every room are simply spectacular. Beds are comfortable, kitchen well equipped, wi-fi strong (I worked remotely while there and had absolutely no issues) and Jo and Harvey were great hosts. Overall, highly recommend this sweet cottage.
