The Old School House is repeatedly praised for its stunning views, tranquility, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests appreciate the property's remote charm, proximity to beautiful beaches, and wildlife. The enclosed garden is a bonus for dog owners, and the house offers a cosy and warm atmosphere. Some guests mention minor maintenance issues and suggest improvements like midge screens, but overall experiences are very positive.
Guests are very satisfied with the cleanliness of the property, mentioning a 'very good cleaner' and describing the house as beautiful and comfy. No negative comments about cleanliness suggest a high standard is maintained.
The location is highly praised for its stunning scenery, proximity to beaches, and the peace and tranquility it offers. It is described as remote, which is appreciated by those seeking a getaway. However, the remoteness may affect accessibility to amenities, which is noted by some guests.
The property is consistently described as cosy, warm, and comfortable, with well-equipped facilities and comfortable beds. The only minor discomfort mentioned relates to an issue with heating and hot water, but this seems to be an isolated incident.
Facilities are generally well-regarded, with a well-equipped kitchen and good quality utensils. However, there are comments about maintenance issues such as heating and hot water problems, and a non-working heated towel rail, which slightly lower the score.
The welcome pack is appreciated by guests, indicating thoughtfulness. However, as gifts are not consistently mentioned and there is a suggestion for improvement (addition of milk), the score reflects that while the property offers thoughtful touches, they may not be guaranteed for every stay.

Originally the village school that served a small rural community in north west Sutherland, The Old School House has been transformed into a delightful stone cottage surrounded by its own enclosed landscaped cottage gardens. The lounge runs the length of the cottage. With the original high ceilings, large windows and Victorian fireplace, this superb room has a warm, welcoming ambience and provides plenty of space for guests to sit and admire the view whilst enjoying a wee dram or two in front of the open fire. There is a large double bedroom with a super king sized bed, a twin room and a small third bedroom with bunk beds for two children. They are all attractively presented with colour co-ordinated soft furnishings. The gardens are a real delight, with a stone slab path leading up through the flower beds to a garden seat from which there are spectacular views across the bay to Handa Island and the Outer Isles. The mountains of Foinavon, Ben Stack and Arkle are also visible.
The immediate area is haven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors generally. Hill walking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing are all local activities. There is a thriving pony trekking centre in the nearby village of Sheigra, with rides amidst spectacular scenery. Fishing in the surrounding lochs and rivers as well as sea fishing is a popular pastime. The area is also a haven for wildlife, with seals and otters in the bay and numerous varieties of birds attracted to the region.
The beaches in this area are renowned. Sandwood Bay is particularly noted, with a wonderful walk across the machair to its secluded sweeping sands. The nearby beaches of Oldshoremore and Polin are also renowned for their unspoilt beauty. Kinlochbervie is the nearest main village. The most northerly port on the west coast of Scotland, this pretty village has an active working harbour and offers good local facilities, including a shop and post office, as well as a hotel with restaurant open all year to non-residents for meals.

If you want remote then this is for you, make sure you are stocked up with groceries and fuel in your car . We had internet issues the whole two weeks but it wasn't a worry for us as we use our own firestick and the phone as a hotspot. To be fair the owner was very good trying to get it sorted out and gave us free logs and coal for our stay . The wind there can be biting as we experienced going in Feb , but that being said the weather was pretty good for us the whole two weeks .

We always love returning to the Old School having visited for many years with our children and this time with our grandchildren. The beaches are stunning, the views of sea and mountains are heart stopping and the peace and tranquility need to be experienced.
