Minutes from the amenities of Inverness, but on the doorstep of the Beauly Firth, Dunolly Cottage enjoys a beautiful waterfront position alongside the Caledonian Canal.

There’s plenty of room for six people (plus 2 small children) within a family or group of friends, with twin and double bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, a comfortable sitting room and lounge. The whole house has been refurbished in a simple yet elegant style that blends beautifully with its 19th century Georgian roots, and as an added bonus, the only traffic you’ll find nearby is on the water. There are plenty of areas to sit and relax, in the beautiful sash windows, on the sumptuous sofas and even in the four-poster bed in the master bedroom!

Dunolly Cottage was bought by the Caledonian Canal Commissioners prior to the construction of the canal and has been a listed building ever since. The ground floor was used as offices for the canal company; Thomas Telford even stayed in the upper floor rooms during his brief visits overseeing the construction of the canal!

Sit at the upstairs window seats and watch the world go sailing by, or relax outside on a canalside walk. Or take the short drive to the city and get out and about in the Highland capital. Who could ask for more? When a 10-minute drive takes you to the city centre, you’d think this place would be all about Inverness. But Clachnaharry has its own sights to see, so before you hit the city, take a tour of your surroundings.

Nearby, Tomnahurich Hill is the stuff of legend. In former times, according to local folklore, it was the home of the fairies. There are tales of a fiddler taken captive by the fairy queen. After spending a night in her kingdom, he returns to find hundreds of years have gone by. Look out for a confused musician while you’re on your rambles! The hill is also said to be the resting place of Scottish seer Thomas the Rhymer. According to legend he lies with his men and their white horses, ready to rise again should Scotland need them. He’s in good company. The cemetery built on the hill in the 19th century contains memorials for two Scottish recipients of the Victoria Cross. Major-General Sir Robert Adams won his for bravery during the Indian mutiny. Rear Admiral Sir Anthony Capel Miers received his for torpedoing a German destroyer and supply ships during World War 2.

As if local legends weren’t enough, you can also explore Nessie’s story. Nearby Tomnahurich Bridge is a pick-up point for cruise boats heading to Loch Ness to search for the elusive monster. Yet all of this is only two miles from Inverness, with all the attractions it has to offer. Shop in the Victorian Market or the award-winning Eastgate Centre. Visit the castle or the cathedral, or Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Get a taste of the tropical at Inverness Floral Hall or a flavour of fine dining at restaurants throughout the city.
