Nestled well off the beaten track yet only 1.5 miles from Grantown-on-Spey, this homely cottage in Cairngorms National Park makes an excellent pick for a family of four seeking to unwind in peace and quiet. Set at the foothills of the Cairngorms and surrounded by striking woodland and open moorland, you’d be forgiven for only exploring your immediate location by foot or by bike. If you do want to go further, then Grantown-on-Spey has a wonderful 18-hole golf course, as well as a thriving high street full of shops, pubs and restaurants. Energetic activities, such as mountain biking and hiking, can be found in Aviemore (15 miles), or ascend to the top of Ben Macdui (25 miles) for spectacular, camera-worthy views. For a day out, Highland Wildlife Park (24 miles) is a great place to see wild animals up close.

Enter this fully modernised shepherd's cottage and step through into the generous open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner, where you will be greeted by cosy stone walls and a superb wood burner for year-round comfort. There are sofas and a chair to relax on while you watch TV, pop in a DVD, or listen to music on the CD player. The family-friendly kitchen is to the rear of the room, with ample equipment so you can whip up all your favourite meals. A charming circular dining table nestles beside this and is perched under the window for a lovely view while you dine. Just off this is a utility room housing a washing machine, and a shower room with a WC. When it’s time to turn in for the night, head upstairs to the two spacious bedrooms.
