About this property

Get back to nature in the wilds of Scotland, in this cosy, modern cottage designed by award-winning architects. There’s a river at the bottom of the garden, and a famous steam railway line visible from the property too.

**Please note: Intermittent works are being undertaken on a neighbouring property 60-80m away, finishing the internal portion of their home.**

River Fae is a superbly built property, designed by the award-winning Dualchas Architects to mix modern comforts with the feel of a cosy cottage. The property’s natural materials mirror the beauty of the surrounding area. Inside, you’ll find an open-plan living, kitchen and dining space, with a floor-to-ceiling sliding patio window doors that present a stunning view of the beautiful countryside. You might spot a deer or two as you look out on the landscape - or perhaps even the Hogwarts Express!

The architects have created something special, with underfloor heating throughout the property, as well as designer furniture in the sitting room, including a contemporary style wood-burning stove. The owners have added to the comfort, by providing useful items like a laptop for guests to search the internet and send emails, and there’s a large 65” television to snuggle up to and enjoy TV and movies from your favourite apps provided complimentary, such as Amazon, Netflix, BBC and more.

But more than just the house is the beautiful scenery it nestles in. The garden stretches down to the fast-flowing River Slatach, and you’ll also be able to spot ‘Hogwarts Express’, the Jacobite steam train that passes nearby from our viewing platform atop of the hill. Take time to wander over rustic bridges and take a walk through our Fae Forest and River Walks. Part of the owner's ongoing project is to rewild one-acre of land by planting native trees and reintroducing the wildlife back to an otherwise peat landscape.

With the River Slatach in close proximity to the cottage, it is advised that young children are not left unattended.

It’s quite difficult to adequately express the feelings of dismay we experienced, when approaching River Fae only to find the adjacent house being built/worked on, with crane in situ, along with various mobile homes and busy tradespeople. Once inside the property the sound of power tools and hammering was more than upsetting. I reported this immediately to Rural Retreats and was informed that they had not been made aware of the ongoing works, and that if they had have been, I would have been advised of this, with a view to having the option to cancel. I booked this property almost one year ago, and to drive 600 miles to be put in this situation is both intolerable and unacceptable. After a period of time I was informed that the owner sent his sincere apologies, but he had no knowledge of such significant works taking place, and I was offered two nights of the seven free as compensation/goodwill. Somewhat disingenuously, I was advised that the owner was surprised that we could hear external noise inside the property, as it was built as a ‘passive house’. This misses the point somewhat… I attempted to find alternative accommodation, but was unable to do so. The owner of the property then apparently had dialogue with the owner of the adjacent property and the works were certainly toned down, but there were people on site every day and overnight and there were significant commercial vehicle movements for the duration of our stay. I struggle to believe that nobody knew these works were taking place, and we had a stressful week, not the peaceful and tranquil rural retreat we were promised, and it certainly looks as though there is still a lot of work to take place…Other than that, the sofa was comfortable…
