About this property

Vatersay Cottage is part of a three-cottage hamlet at Kytra Lock. This heritage cottage enjoys all the benefits of a completely secluded spot but offers easy access to whole host of activities. Full of original charm, Vatersay has period features, polished wooden floors and traditional fabrics that give it character and comfort.

The double, twin and single bedrooms are all beautifully designed and decorated with a great blend of modern style and traditional fabrics. The twin features a delightful window seat overlooking the canal, so you can enjoy a quiet moment watching the world sail by. Two downstairs sitting rooms – one with a cosy wood-burning stove – provide plenty of living space, and the compact but well-designed kitchen has everything you need. Outside, there’s a private garden overlooking the water where songbirds perch in the trees, and with a little patience can be tempted down to the wooden bench with a handful of crumbs!

Kytra Lock is the ideal location for people who really want to get away from it all. It’s as sheltered and secluded a spot as you’ll find anywhere, yet it’s only two miles (or an incredibly enjoyable 45-minute walk) from Fort Augustus and a range of activities – if you feel like being active, that is. Sitting on the southernmost tip of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus is well worth a visit. An impressive system of locks brings canal boats into the village, and if you’re going to have a canalside holiday, what better place to visit than the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre?

About seven miles from Fort Augustus are the spectacular Moriston Falls, complete with leaping salmon if you time your visit right (we recommend visiting the Thomas Telford Bridge for the best possible view!). Invermoriston, the village beside the falls, offers all the activities you’d expect from a Highland location - cycling, walking, riding, shooting, fishing – it’s all here.

If all the peace and quiet gets too much, Fort William and Inverness are less than an hour’s drive away. But we’re betting that once you get to Kytra Lock, all you’ll want to do is sit back and drink it in.
