The coastal location in a historic fishing village is hard to beat. To open the door and look to the right and see the shimmering sea only a stone’s throw away, it’s pure bliss!.

Situated in the characterful fishing village of Avoch on the Black Isle, By the Sea is tucked up along historic James Street and is only a stone’s throw away from the sea. In fact, you stand on the front door step, look to the right and the sea is a mere hundred yards away. This is a truly coastal cottage. Avoch is only twenty minutes drive to the Highland capital Inverness and even closer to the world-renown North Coast 500 touring route. You’re so very well placed at Driftwood Cottage to explore the fantastic far north of Scotland. You can reach Applecross, Torridon, Ullapool and even the Isle of Skye for day trips if you wish, as well as iconic places up the east coast including John O’Groats.
However, at By the Sea you have a fabulous area in the Black Isle to easily journey around and get to know. It’s one of Scotland’s treasures, it really is. Beyond Avoch’s historic cottages and buildings you have an old harbour that has seen much activity over hundreds of years. There’s still a small fishing fleet, but larger boats are now landed elsewhere. Instead you will find a dolphin watching trip departing from the harbour that we highly recommend taking. A few miles down the road from Avoch you have historic Fortrose & Rosemarkie. More amazing old buildings for you to wander round, including the incredible ruin of Fortrose Cathedral built in the early 13th century. There are some wonderful places to eat and drink in Fortrose as well as in Rosemarkie, so head on over to these neighbouring villages.
In addition to places to visit and to eat, Fortrose & Rosemarkie are home to a fabulous and very old links golf course (15th oldest course in the world), a beautiful sandy beach, a Stevenson lighthouse at Chanonry Point and at the same location one of the best places in the world to watch Bottlenose Dolphins from the shore. The boat trip to see dolphins from Avoch usually makes a beeline to the waters just off Chanonry Point. Another place you must visit on the Black Isle is another historic village called Cromarty. It’s a welcoming community with an amazing coffee shop, more options for a dolphin watching trip as well as an arthouse cinema, another Stevenson lighthouse and a fishertown to rival that of Avoch’s. You’ll be very happy spending a short break or longer stay at the cottage. Beach 4 miles.

Very nice cottage, ideal for a couple with dogs. A tad small for a family though. We have stayed in avoch previously so knew what to expect. A point to remember you have to travel to find a supermarket if you want to do a large shop. Local scotmid is all you get here.if takeaways are your thing then the Indian and Chinese are good.ideal for travelling out to different places sightseeing ( we were up for the dolphins) one last thing only minor though parking spaces are limited so you need to park by the sea front 2 mins walk
