Musselburgh was founded as a fort inland from the mouth of the River Esk by the Romans after their conquest of Scotland in AD 80. Famous for its racecourse and numerous golf courses, the town is located 6 miles along the Forth coast from Edinburgh and is part of the John Muir Way. The coastal resort of Portobello, located just up the coast from Musselburgh, is known for its broad sandy beach, numerous community-run events, Victorian Portobello baths, and numerous eateries.
