Situated on a 75 acre rural estate, cut through by the River Nith and surrounded by the beauty of the Nithsdale Valley, Glen Roe is a comfortable and beautifully finished traditional wooden holiday lodge. The estate itself is home to some of Scotland's most iconic wildlife such as deer, otter and badgers and offers an array of rural pursuits including game and coarse fishing, as well as horse riding packages to suit all abilities but specialising in side-saddle riding. There is also a nearby public open-air swimming pool to keep the kids occupied!
Woodland and river walks are accessible from the doorstep but for the more adventurous, the Ayshire Coastal Path is close and takes in a 100 mile stretch of coastland offering up panoramic views, sandy beaches and historic sites like Greenan and Culzean Castle. Alternatively, Galloway Forest and Dark Sky Park, home of Cairnsmore of Fleet and The Merrick, is only a 40 minute drive.
Continuing along the theme of dark skies, the Observatory at Dalmellington is well worth a visit (booking essential.)
Firmly located within 'Burns Country' no trip to Glen Roe is complete without a visit to Burns Cottage and Museum, as well as Brig O' Doon, of Tam O' Shanter fame. For any golf fan, a visit to Troon and Turnberry is highly recommended, though if you prefer a faster pace of life, the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are both within a 2 hour drive.
