There is a restaurant and bar at Sandyhills and a village shop and cafe at Colvend; Kippford has two popular pubs both serving food and also a tea room. The bustling village of Kippford is a sailing centre which ensures that there is always something to watch while taking sustenance at one of the two hostelries.

South Scotland is famous for its beautiful scenery and surprisingly mild climate due to the effects of the Gulf Stream. The area abounds with Scottish culture and history with too many sites to mention. Three which should not be missed would include Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey, Threave Gardens and Castle at Castle Douglas and slightly further afield Logan Botanic Gardens together with the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse. The area also has superb outdoor recreational facilities and opportunities with wildlife and bird watching almost wherever you are and in particular the rspb Mersehead Reserve at Southwick, Galloway Forest Park for both wildlife watching and also walking and mountain biking. Those looking for testing bike trails can enjoy the Forestry Commission 7Stanes Routes with the chance to try a different trail on every day of the week! Sea and loch sailing is available in the near vicinity with the principal base being Kippford for sea sailing whilst Loch Ken provides opportunities for sailing and water skiing. Throughout the area there is sea, loch and course fishing and also, of course, golf with courses to suit all abilities with the charming Colvend course being with in walking distance and only slightly further afield is the challenging Southerness Championship Links Course (Seven miles).

Portling View, with its comfortable and well laid out accommodation including a lovely small Juliet balcony with panoramic view out onto the Solway Firth provides a truly exceptional holiday location.

We loved the apartment: beautiful, elegant, and comfortable, showing its origins as a grand house, and wonderfully spacious. (We had cupboard envy!) It's self-contained, and the boot-room lobby in the entrance downstairs meant we could leave all our muddy and sandy things well out of the way. David had obviously put considerable thought into everything one might need, for everyday living and for recreation. (The family bookshelf offered a snapshot of classics for every age, including a duplicate set of 'Tin-Tin'.) The kitchen was excellent, and well-equipped, though I was glad to have a tall companion, to extract large, heavy, crockery, out of high shelves. Perhaps adding few smaller mugs would be helpful? A large and useful fridge was great for self-catering. All spotless, making me worry a little about spoiling the carpet, under the dining-table; again, perhaps a large rug there might avert risk? Views, gardens, and little balcony were lovely, and the walk to the sea a delight. It was a treat to be able to walk in the whole lower garden, with its old plantings, and visits from wild life. Thank you!
