The owners' thoughtfulness is evident in gestures like a welcome box of chocolates and fresh flowers, though such gifts should be seen as a delightful bonus rather than an expectation.

The cottage is close to the Red Kite trail and within easy reach of the Galloway Forest park, nominated Britain's first ever Dark Sky Park due to the low levels of light pollution. It is an excellent centre for walking, mountain biking, bird watching, wild flower study, fishing and sailing, and on a clear night offers fantastic opportunities for star gazing, the cottage is also within easy reach of the Solway coast with its numerous beaches and fine headlands. Coarse fishing is available (charges apply) on the River Dee which runs through the estate and also on nearby Woodhall Loch. Fishing also available, by permit, on Loch Ken. Other water sports available on the Estate include free wild swimming, with the owners able to provide kayaks, Canadian canoes and paddle boards at an additional charge, it is also possible to hire the services of qualified instructors if required.
The local towns of Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright are close by and the area boasts numerous sites of historic and cultural interest including Threave Castle together with National Trust for Scotland property at Threave and Broughton House & Garden in Kirkcudbright.
