In 1951, Glencairn Balfour Paul saw the house from the road and fell in love with it. His brother Ian, a keen bird watcher and elder of the Kirk, lived there for twenty years from 1990, following which other family members now maintain the house and its grounds through holiday lets. It has caught the eye of many passing artists who have depicted the house and adjoining wood, including early 20th-century local artists such as A R Sturrock and A M Hotchkis. The Balfour Pauls found Little Boreland just magical.
There are sandy beaches and rocky coves along the coast while the hillier countryside is good for walking. Nearby the Galloway Forest Park, known for its starlit dark skies, has excellent cycle paths. Nearby are many attractive towns including Kirkcudbright, the artists’ town, offering boat trips and art and craft shops; Castle Douglas, Scotland’s food town with many specialist shops and nearby Threave Castle and Gardens; Wigtown, Scotland’s national book town, and Creetown featuring the Gem Rock Museum.

What a lovely house in a truly beautiful location. We had the pleasure of visiting during the bluebell season, and the woodland walks from the house were absolutely delightful, with deer and stunning scenery all around. The neighbouring countryside is truly picturesque, offering so much to see and do, and the inclusion of cycling sheds was very much appreciated. The house itself is wonderful, clearly a cherished family home. We noticed the numerous notes throughout, which I understand are there due to previous damage; however, there were quite a few, and it made for an interesting little exploration to see which rooms had the most notes and which had the fewest. The bathroom surprisingly had the most notes of all.

Another fabulous stay at Little Boreland. Red squirrels visited every day. We saw so many birds, including a sparrow hawk land on the feeder. The cottage is cosy, extremely comfortable and very well equipped. The setting is stunning. Highly recommend, we are already planning our next visit.

Nice original cottage in lovely location.Close to walks, bike trails and beautiful woods and beaches. The cottage itself is in substantial grounds, with birds, deer and badgers all visitors.Would say that 3 of the 5 bedrooms are for children only and the steps to the two attic rooms are very steep so maybe not suitable for very young children but otherwise spacious, well equipped and very clean with a lot of history. The place grew on us as the the week went on! Thanks for a lovely break.
