The cottage has a peaceful setting in the small hamlet of Ruthwell making it ideal for a restful holiday but with all the excellent outdoor activities that are available close by, it may be that you only get to rest in the evening by the gas fuelled stove in the sitting room.

Chatelherault offers spacious and comfortable country living perfect for a romantic escape or fabulous family holiday in a traditional semi detached cottage with open fields to the rear and the chance to see stunning starscapes at night. The cottage has a peaceful setting in the small village of Ruthwell making it ideal for a restful holiday but with all the excellent outdoor activities that are available close by, it may be that you only get to rest in the evening by the gas fuelled stove in the sitting room.

The local area is renowned for the vast flocks of wintering wildfowl on the Solway Firth mud flats, reserves at Caerlaverock and Mersehead give wonderful opportunities to get closer to the the mesmerising flocks of tens of thousands of geese. The reserves also offer guided nature trails in the summer when the geese are away.

Scotland's history and heritage is close by with the first Savings Bank having been established in 1820 in the village, Brow Well (chalybeate spring) was renowned for the assumed healing qualities of its waters, especially amongst residents of Dumfries, Robert Burns came to stay in the nearby Brow Inn (demolished in 1863) on 4 July 1796 to seek a cure for what we now know was rhumatic fever on the advice of his doctor. Ruthwell Cross, housed within Ruthwell Church is thought to date back to around AD 680, this magnificent cross is one of the most famous and elaborate Anglo-Saxon monumental sculptures. In the nearby village of Ecclefechan is the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle who was a prolific writers and social commentators of the 19th century, his house is open to the public through National Trust For Scotland. Robert Bruce had a big influence on the local area and his statue can be seen in Lochmaben with his cave in Kirkpatrick Fleming, Dumfries also has sites connected with Bruce's historic activities which include Castle Dykes Park above the River Nith.

The Solway Firth has many excellent the beaches with the nearest being at Powfoot, and numerous woodlands and forests to explore including Mabie Forest on the far side of the Nith Estuary, all of which are within a 30 minute drive. There's plenty to tire younger family members out, with Mabie Farm Park, Dalscone Farm Fun and Moat Brae, the inspiration for J M Barrie's Peter Pan all worth a visit and promising a relaxing evening for adults! The area also offers superb opportunities for outdoor activities both along the Solway coast and also inland where there is a great variety of river walks through to the hilltops giving magnificent panoramas to enjoy. There are numerous golf courses with great variety ranging from sea shore courses at near by Powfoot or slightl.y further afield Southerness which contrast with the sheltered Hoddam Castle riverside course. The choice of other outdoor activities is almost endless and includes fishing, horse riding, water sports and mountain biking all of which are within easy reach.

Chatelerhault accepts bookings with changeover days being on a Monday or a Friday. Short breaks are welcome throughout the year for either 3 nights Friday to Monday or 4 nights Monday to Friday
