About this property

Superb holiday location on the beautiful shores of Loch Awe the carriage offers a comfortable accommodation for a quirky and different holiday. This traditional carriage is just metres from the shore of Loch Awe, Argyll Scotland's largest inland loch, with fabulous views over to Kilchurn Castle in one of the most scenic yet easily accessible parts of Scotland.

The Railway Carriage is truly unique as one of the last "Camping Carriages", it makes for a by gone years holiday which will be memorable particularly with the stunning location on the edge of Loch Awe with views to kilchurn Castle and the surrounding mountains. The Railway Carriage has been carefully restored to maintain all original features and provides comfortable accommodation for a quirky and unforgettable holiday. The carriage originally ran on the London to Edinburgh main line and has been converted by an enthusiast into a delightful and unusual holiday home. This Railway Carriage is set just metres from the shore of Loch Awe which is Scotland's largest inland loch and has fabulous views over to Kilchurn Castle in one of the most scenic yet easily accessible parts of Scotland.

The small village of Lochawe has good local facilities with the Ben Cruchan Inn an excellent pub serving good food and a post office/shop all within a very short walk. There are beautiful views over to Kilchurn Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Britain which is accessible by foot along an attractive path from the Castle's car park and the Castle is just one mile from the Carriage.

Whilst enjoying a stuning rurla location Oban with all it's excelent resteraunts and facilities is within easy reach and also allows you to take day trips to the Isles such as Mull. There are also a great many places of interest and things to do close by, including: cruises on Loch Etive, boat hire on lochs Awe and Etive, The Sea Life Centre, Oban chocolate factory, The Inverawe Smokery (with excellent facilities for families), Inveraray Castle and Jail, Oban Distillery and many other places.

Loch Awe station is a stop on the West Highland Line from Glasgow to Oban which, together with the local buses which pass the road end, allows visitors to arrive and reach many local places of interest by public transport as well as by car. The Hydro-Electric Power Station (well worth a visit) within the "hollow mountain" of Ben Cruchan is served by its own railway halt four miles away. ScotRail's Caledonian sleeper provides easy access from the south and car hire is available in Oban. Oban is an excellent shopping centre and many ferries provide opportunities to travel to Mull, Iona and the many other islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. Rather than a long car journey, why not travel by rail to the adjacent station and hire a car locally.

Fishing permits can be obtained from the Post Office for fishing on the loch which is perfect for sailing and boating.

For the enthusiast, the carriage is a Mark 1 number 4494 built at York in 1956.

recreate THE carefree holidays OF THE 1950s............BUT this time IN comfort!!

Exceeded our expectations. The area is so beautiful and calm, I slept so well in the comfy bed. The carriage is well-equipped for a small space. Near some great attractions and countryside. We’re booked to have another week there in September, can’t wait!
