About this property

Perched on the outskirts of Staithes in North Yorkshire, is this idyllic studio-style cottage, Swallow Cottage. Enjoying a superb and rural location within the North York Moors National Park, with easy access to the local amenities and coast, Swallow Cottage is a fabulous dog-friendly base for a couple and their two canine companions. Leave your vehicle on the driveway, before making your way into your new holiday home. Be welcomed into the open-plan living space, where you can look forward to impressing your other half with delicious meals, whipped up in the kitchenette, ready to enjoy over a celebratory bottle of fizz at the dining table for two. After dinner, snuggle up on the sofa and select a much-loved film from the Smart TV as the evening’s entertainment. After a day of hiking through the moors, wash away the day with a refreshing shower, before climbing into the sumptuous double bed to catch your rest. In the morning, prepare a steaming cup of coffee ready to enjoy out in the front garden as you plan the days itinerary with a backdrop of beautiful rural views. Take the short drive into the village centre, where you can sample fresh and local seafood at the Whitby Crab and Cod & Lobster or traditional pub grub at The Fox & Hounds, perfect for those evenings when you don’t fancy cooking! There is also a well-stocked convenience store for picking up any essentials. You can also enjoy leisurely strolls along the Staithes Beck or delving into history at the Captain Cook & Staithes Heritage Centre. Take advantage of having the North York Moors right on your doorstep and embark on wildlife rich hikes, visit Mulgrave Castle or tackle the imposing peaks of Ingleby Incline and The Wainstones. Continue onto Whitby, home to a remarkable Gothic cathedral, an excellent golf club, the 199 Steps where you can expect panoramic views at their top, and the golden sands of Whitby Beach, where you can bathe, paddle the shores or hook your catch of the day along the West Pier. For more seaside fun, follow the Cinder Track over to Scarborough, where you will find the delights of Scarborough Castle, Alpamare, and the Scarborough Open Air Theatre. Whisk the one who means most away for a memorable stay at Swallow Cottage.

Cobbled streets and backstreets of Staithes, a peaceful seaside village, are a dream come true for artists. All of the residences and cottages are located around the historic harbour and flanked on three sides by steep, rugged, and sandy cliffs with a sheltered sandy beach. Captain Cook was apprenticed to a draper in the town near the harbour. Visitors to the Yorkshire Coast must stop at Staithes these days, where they will find a wide range of restaurants, pubs, and stores. A lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) are still in operation in Staithes, and boat trips for birdwatching as well as fishing and whale-watching are available. Old Jack's Boat, a beloved BBC children's series, is set here.

In Staithes, art and heritage festivals, galleries and artists studios, as well as regular art classes and workshops are all available. Local trail guides are available to help visitors navigate the ginnels (alleyways) in the area. It's best to see the town from the cliff's edge on the Cleveland Way, a path that descends to the water's edge. From here you can take day trips to the Yorkshire Coast, Whitby and Scarborough, and the North York Moors National Park's hill towns.

We wanted somewhere quiet for NYE as our dog is extremely frightened of fireworks. This location was ideal. So peaceful. Lucky enough to see Barn Owls flying during the day. Swallow Cottage is ideally placed for trips to Staithes, Runswick Bay and Saltburn. It was lovely to meet Paul, the owner, who was around if needed. Thanks for the bottle of wine by the way. Hoping to book again later in the year if our plans work out. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Couldn't be made more welcome by hosts and dogs (and chickens). Our Laddie still misses Coco the doggie pal he met there on his very first holiday

How host was a true gentleman and he left us a welcome pack of eggs, bread, milk, tea and coffee. Which I must say was very welcome after a long journey. We were also welcomed by 2 dogs and 5 chickens which was delightful. I can’t recommend this cottage enough if you’re looking for peace and quiet this is for you. We where blessed with beautiful weather so was able to see the fantastic North Yorkshire countryside and it’s amazing coast.
