Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army barracks are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.
Please note: As the four lodges are in close proximity to one another, they could be booked for groups of up to 24 guests. Additional en-suite rooms available on site, on request with owner.. In Staithes, near Whitby there is the Life Boat weekend in August and the Arts and Heritage Festival in September.
Baby bath and socket protectors available on request. There is a car number plate recognistion system in place, please advise the owner of your car number plate in advance of your stay. Bike parking racks available for bikes, cover can be provided on request.
Towels can be provided upon request for pets. Please call to request this or let the owner know when you contact them to arrange key collection. Please ensure the owner is aware you would like these before arrival at the property.

Fantastic location, close to the centre of Staithes village with the added bonus of on site parking. Bosun’s rest is spacious, cosy and well equipped.

The Bosuns Rest was a pleasant stay, all in all we were very satisfied. The cabin was warm, and the parking was good. Sarah had put Christmas decorations out and some nice Xmas treats left for us. I don’t have any complaints but a few constructive comments.The booking was for a dog friendly accommodation and while dogs were permitted they were not allowed in the bedrooms, if we had known prior we may not have booked as we paid for 2 dogs and one of the dogs has separation anxiety so one of us had to sleep on the couch as she would not settle otherwise, she isn’t a trained assistance dog but grew into the role as I became disabled and she worries I’m ok and became my shadow after my spinal injury. As I say it’s not a complaint but would have been better to know prior to booking. The only other comment would be the lighting in the kitchen area was dimly lit.Now Staithes is a lovely place with real heritage, but again I must say the village is largely unspoiled so vehicles were not even a thought when the place developed, that means parking at the bottom is extremely limited and even with a blue badge you only get 40 minutes max, not long enough to dine down there, the hill down to the village is also exceptionally steep. I genuinely enjoyed our stay and hope my comments are taken constructively.
