Whitby is steeped in history, from its bustling fishing heritage and famous jet jewellery to the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, perched high on the East Cliff overlooking the harbour. The abbey famously inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, adding to the town’s mysterious charm. Wander through the winding cobbled streets lined with independent shops, traditional pubs and seafood restaurants, climb the iconic 199 Steps for spectacular coastal views, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum, or enjoy fish and chips beside the bustling harbour as colourful fishing boats and yachts come and go. Boat trips, whale watching excursions and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway all add to Whitby’s appeal, while the surrounding coastline is home to picturesque villages including Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, Runswick Bay and Sandsend.

Smugglers Den is also an excellent choice for guests bringing their four-legged friends. Whitby is renowned for its fantastic dog walking, with sections of the main beach welcoming dogs all year round, alongside the beautiful Tate Hill Sands and the unspoilt shores of Saltwick Bay. The apartment is also just a short distance from the start of the famous Cinder Track, a scenic walking and cycling route following the former railway line through spectacular countryside towards Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough. A gentle downhill stroll from the apartment brings you into the heart of Whitby, passing the beautiful Pannett Park, home to Whitby Museum and peaceful gardens, making Smugglers Den perfectly placed for discovering both the town and the stunning Yorkshire coast.

Took a risk in booking the accommodation before any reviews had been published. On our journey to the accommodation, we read 3 reviews that had appeared and these were less than favourable. The property is described as having a private parking space but this is extremely tight so we parked on the road instead. Location was good but the property itself was very disappointing. The front door lock is only a Yale lock and didn't feel very secure at all. The property was also very dirty and could do with a deep clean throughout. Kitchen was adequately equipped - only 2 forks and 3 knives, no frying pan. The bedroom was okay but the bed was very small (even though there was enough room for a larger bed). The boiler will come on at night if you don't turn the thermostat down and it is very loud. Shower was good but no hand wash provided. All in all, wouldn't recommend this property.

Location is great! Host was quick to reply to question before we set off, access was easy. But the apartment is grotty. Im not a clean freak but sadly … Its really dirty and we even had to wash glasses and mugs before we could use them. I expected it to be basic and dated which is fine and can be charming but it’s not well kept at all. Its Dirty, the walls, doors frames light switches and door handles are all dirty, drips of food on mantle, dirty mirrors. Thick dust and grime on skirting, bathrooms sink and taps not clean, shower head has not been cleaned in while, dusty spiderwebs on most walls in the sitting room, furniture with lgs are hovered around not under we made the mistake of moving the draws. It could be great but it needs a deep clean and some basic tlc. The inter-mate partners s@x game left for visitors was also a odd addition to a holiday cottage 😂

Great location for Whitby Centre. Property is in a basement of an old town house so there is not much natural light and the usual muskiness you might expect but it’s is quirky and great for a short stay and is dog friendly. The owners are very friendly and replaced a not working kettle within an hour of reporting it. It’s well enough equipped and a decent kitchen and bathroom. I’d recommend it and would stay there again.
