Two miles away is the bustling market town of Pickering, with its castle, museums and the terminus of the renowned North York Moors Steam Railway, which winds its way through the heather-clad moors to Grosmont, a wonderful day out for both young and old. If you fancy a day on the coast, the seaside towns of Whitby, Scarborough and Filey are all within a forty-five minute drive. Just two miles to the east of Pickering, the beautiful village of Thornton-le-Dale lies within The North York Moors National Park. This charming little village has a complicated shape and is comprised of a fascinating labyrinth of streams and paths which run between the pretty houses and around the village green, which still has its wooden stocks and a market cross. Hidden amongst the beautiful houses is a selection of shops, pubs and tearooms whilst the nearby market town of Pickering offers a further range of essential services as well as the North York Moors Steam Railway. The Forestry Commission woodland at Dalby is worth a visit and has several excellent nature trails to be enjoyed whilst slightly further away is the historic cathedral city of York with its huge range of shops, cinemas and museums.
