About this property

12 Castlegate is a charming, attractive, characterful terraced cottage in a quiet position close to the castle, in the centre of the historic market town of Pickering. This Grade II listed property with many original features is perfectly placed for exploring the stunning scenery of the North York Moors and the numerous attractions in this beautiful part of the country. Tastefully furnished and decorated, using pretty Laura Ashley fabrics, a lovely, homely feel runs through the cottage, from the moment you step through the front door. Downstairs, there is a sitting room, with beamed ceilings and a warming open fire, perfect for a romantic night in. The separate dining room and sleek kitchen caters for family needs, whilst upstairs, there are two neat bedrooms. The back door opens onto a delightful and very private rear garden, where you can relax in the sunshine, with a morning coffee, before heading off for the day. A short walk up the hill brings you to the castle ruins, whilst a gentle stroll down the hill brings you into the hustle and bustle of this popular town, with restaurants, quaint tea rooms, pubs, independent shops, and a twice weekly market held in the main street. Pickering is known as the Gateway to the North York Moors National Park, with fabulous walking and cycling opportunities over the stunning moorland and quiet country lanes. A must is a nostalgic trip on the famous steam railway, that winds its way through wonderful scenery, from Pickering to Grosmont, or if you fancy trying your hand at trout fishing, there’s plenty of opportunity nearby. The seaside towns of Whitby and Scarborough are just a scenic drive away and nearby York is the ideal place for a day out, with its Viking Museum, National Railway Museum and Minster. 12 Castlegate provides a warm and welcoming stay, whatever time of the year.

This historic market town, with its full range of amenities and traditional shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, serves as the official gateway to the beautiful North York Moors National Park, home of the Heartbeat countryside. Enjoy a ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, where Harry Potter fans can even explore some of the locations used in the filming of The Philosopher’s Stone! The Beck Isle Museum is also well worth a visit, with its unique collection of black and white photography and displays of rural life. Walkers will be spoilt for choice by the rolling hills, valleys, rivers and abundant wildlife of the North York Moors, whilst the city of York and the Heritage Coast are just half an hour’s drive away. All in all, a wonderful setting for a relaxing holiday.

Nice welcome pack which was handy. In a very quiet location, parking was first come but we always managed to park. Ideal for dog owners, plenty of walks near by. Lovely garden but unfortunately didn't get to sit out, too cold. My only problem was the mattress has definitely seen better days, not comfy at all. There is a door between the lounge and the dining area which needs a mind your head sign as my husband banged his head on it many times, if your over 5ft8 remember to duck.

The cottage is pretty much next to Pickering castle (lots of fun for kids to run round) and walking distance to the steam railway and shops of Pickering. The cottage was very comfortable and clean. It had all the amenities we wished for and more (including a lovely welcome pack). Thank you for a wonderful stay.
