The property's location is frequently commended for its convenience to Richmond's town centre, family-friendly pubs, and scenic walks, although the hilly terrain may be challenging for some.

About this property

This beautiful Grade II listed spacious ground floor apartment, formerly the old Sunday School, is set in an idyllic location on a picturesque village green within a conservation area in Richmond. This lovely character cottage makes the perfect base for friends and families wishing to enjoy the many delights of this old historic town, and the many splendours of Swaledale. You will sense the character of this cottage the minute you arrive and appreciate the attention to detail which exudes throughout. The cosy sitting room has comfortable sofas and chairs, set around an inviting open fire, just perfect for snuggling up in front on cold and chilly nights. There is a modern well-equipped kitchen, with a lovely tiled floor leading to a beautiful dining room with an original window, stone flagged floor, exposed feature stone wall and French doors overlooking the pleasant courtyard with a private hot tub. There are three comfortable and beautifully furnished bedrooms, dressed with Egyptian cotton sheets, and two of which benefit from king-size double beds, ensuring you will have a peaceful night’s sleep. There are two stylish bathrooms, including a useful wet room with a large walk-in shower, which may be suitable for wheelchair users. Outside, there is a fully enclosed courtyard with a welcoming hot tub, ideal for relaxing with a glass of fizz at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. A short drive from the cottage takes you to the George and Dragon pub in Hudswell. This is an award-winning pub, becoming the CAMRA pub of the year for 2017. Richmond is famous for its fascinating Norman castle, which can be seen on the hill from the cottage, and is where you can enjoy walks along the castle walls and down to the River Swale. The delightful old town centre has a huge cobbled town square surrounded by shops, pubs, cafes, tearooms and restaurants, and with a weekly market too there is plenty on offer for all tastes. With so many exciting opportunities in the surrounding area, and with Swaledale and the Yorkshire Dales on your doorstep, this is an ideal location for a well-deserved break. Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1050522, together sleeping 14 people.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

Lots of walks around the river Swale from the doorstep with the rest of the Dales a short drive. We had a winter family break for 3 couples here and will probably do the same again next year.

Emma and Paul are great, really helpful when needed. Richmond is a lovely town. Lots of great places to eat, lovely walks and places to visit

The Orangery was great for us all to be seated comfortably, we didn’t use the front room at all. The bedrooms were spacious and the beds really comfy. We had everything we needed and the hot tub was a bonus. Richmond was really nice, the walk up the hill would be a challenge for a lot of people but taxis are available. Will definitely return.
