Guests say

The Old Sunday School in Richmond is highly praised for its comfort, welcoming hosts, and thoughtful touches like a welcome hamper. Guests love the hot tub and the property's proximity to local amenities and scenic walks. While most reviews are glowing, a few mention minor issues with maintenance and cleanliness.

Most guests found the property to be clean and well-kept, with only a single review mentioning concerns about cleanliness, such as cobwebs and a dirty hot tub. This suggests that cleanliness is generally of a high standard, but there may be occasional lapses.

The location is consistently praised for being close to the town centre, with easy access to shops, pubs, and walks. The scenic beauty of Richmond and the convenience of the location contribute to a high score, although one review mentions the town's hilly nature.

Guests frequently mention the comfort of the property, including comfortable beds and a cosy atmosphere. There are a few mentions of the property being cold and issues with a sofa bed, but overall, the property is regarded as very comfortable.

While many reviews positively highlight the hot tub and the welcome hamper, there are mixed comments about maintenance issues such as broken dishwashers and heating problems. Due to these mixed reviews, a precise score cannot be accurately determined.

The hosts are frequently commended for their thoughtfulness, including welcome hampers with treats like prosecco. However, it should be noted that such gifts, while appreciated, are not guaranteed for every stay.

This lovely character cottage makes the perfect base for friends and families wishing to enjoy the many delights of this old historic town, and the many splendours of Swaledale. You will sense the character of this cottage the minute you arrive and appreciate the attention to detail which exudes throughout. The cosy sitting room has comfortable sofas and chairs, set around an inviting open fire, just perfect for snuggling up in front on cold and chilly nights.

There is a modern well-equipped kitchen, with a lovely tiled floor leading to a beautiful dining room with an original window, stone flagged floor, exposed feature stone wall and French doors overlooking the pleasant courtyard with a private hot tub. There are three comfortable and beautifully furnished bedrooms, dressed with Egyptian cotton sheets, and two of which benefit from king-size double beds, ensuring you will have a peaceful night’s sleep. There are two stylish bathrooms, including a useful wet room with a large walk-in shower, which may be suitable for wheelchair users. Outside, there is a fully enclosed courtyard with a welcoming hot tub, ideal for relaxing with a glass of fizz at the end of a busy day of sightseeing.

A short drive from the cottage takes you to the George and Dragon pub in Hudswell. This is an award-winning pub, becoming the CAMRA pub of the year for 2017. Richmond is famous for its fascinating Norman castle, which can be seen on the hill from the cottage, and is where you can enjoy walks along the castle walls and down to the River Swale. The delightful old town centre has a huge cobbled town square surrounded by shops, pubs, cafes, tearooms and restaurants, and with a weekly market too there is plenty on offer for all tastes. With so many exciting opportunities in the surrounding area, and with Swaledale and the Yorkshire Dales on your doorstep, this is an ideal location for a well-deserved break.

Note: This property can be booked with Ref. 1050522, together sleeping 14 people.

Situated at the entrance to Swaledale, the ancient market town of Richmond stands on a prominent hilltop site to the north of the River Swale. Its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071, famously situated high above the river - indeed the name Richmond is derived from 'Riche-mont' meaning 'strong hill'. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries and the resulting elegant Georgian architecture lines many of the old streets. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round.

Hot tub and wood fire was a great bonus :)

We did find the property cold at times and I'd suggest regular times for the heating to come on now its colder (particularly for arrival and in the morning). The bathroom being off one of the main lounges isn't really explained in the description and the smaller bathroom didn't smell great (damp?). The hot tub jets aren't the strongest but recognise this could be the model. Loved the location.

The beds were incredibly comfortable, we slept really well. A few small tweaks would have improved the experience even more: it was a bit cold in the evenings, some drainage issues that caused the shower to overflow onto the floor, pans not suitable for gas flames and a non stick frying pan would be great for omlettes etc. The owners were incredibly helpful when we needed them.
