Another one for history lovers is the impressive ruins of Easby Abbey, which sits just outside Richmond (4 miles). Barnard Castle (12.5 miles), a town celebrated for its independent shops, cafes, art galleries and esteemed Bowes Museum, is another fantastic option for day trips.
